What's up with the NRA sending me a DVD and telling me I owe them 10 bucks or send it back. I don't recall signing up for a book club, what a bunch of crap.

If I remember my business law correctly, if a company sends you anything that was not ordered by you, you can keep it and do not have to reimburse them for the product. Nor are you required to return it to them either. I think I have a couple of videos around here somewhere that the NRA sent me years ago under the same pretense. Never asked to be sent them, never returned them, never paid for them.

I agree that this is bad PR and chicken@#$% of them, but you are under no obligation to either pay for or return the video. Once they sent it to you, it became your property.

Just ignore it. Look at as a free gift. The law says you cannot be charged for anything sent to you unsolicited.

They don't actually want it back, that's just a way to guilt you into paying for it. If you send it back, it will just cost them more labor to process it & destroy it.

Yeah, I felt that was pretty tacky as well. They could have been more upfront about it. "If you like the DVD and feel it's worth $10 dollars we would appreciate the payment, if not, it's our gift to you."

Re: Your letter, dated August 9, 2008 “DVD Series”

In your letter to me you are asking for either payment for the last DVD sent or the return thereof.

Let me tell you that this is the second unsolicited DVD that has been sent to me. First, I do not appreciate being sent something that requires me to either mail it back or pay for it. When you sent the first DVD, it aggravated me, but I dutifully mailed the DVD back and requested that no more be sent.

When the second DVD was sent, it angered me to the point I threw it away, so here I sit not wanting to pay for something and not having it to return. This is a whole lot of grief and hassle that I never asked for in the first place……….. and by the way, I don’t even own a DVD player.

I’d rather be reading my American Rifleman than responding to this issue. I am very appreciative of NRA and what it does, especially on the legal and political fronts. I also realize that this DVD offer helps in raising money for the NRA.

I’ll make you a deal. This friendly letter of yours is asking for $27.44 from me. Trust me. As a matter of principle, I will not pay this.

Here’s the deal; I’ve enclosed $50 as a donation to the NRA. What I’d like you to do is to is to make this invoice go way and never send me another unsolicited DVD or invoice thereof in the future.

Lastly, I’d like a response to this correspondence.

Sincerely,

I didn't think joining the NRA was like joining a cheesy book club is all. I guess the actual response should be rather....."thanks for the free gift."

Jest chill...and enjoy your FREE DVD!

(From an earlier thread on the same subject
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=416392)

Had the same thing happen to me years ago-I would have returned the DVD if I had known what it was, but it was in an unmarked box and I ripped it open to find a "10 Guns That Changed The World" DVD with the same "offer" as yours.
Law sez you don't have to pay for unsolicited items, and I wasn't going to go through the hassle/time/money to repackage and send back, so I kept it. They sent me letters/bills/invoices for a while and they went straight to the trash. Someone finally called me and I informed them I knew of the law regarding unsolicited items, and AFA I was concerned it was "end of story"-sho 'nuff, it was!

If I remember correctly, it was not the NRA that sent the DVD, but a 3rd party that no doubt got my name from the NRA and was using the NRA logo etc, apparently with the NRA's blessing.

Short story-don't worry 'bout it and enjoy your new DVD! Trust me-do what I did and you won't be receiving 'em for long!

I'd be worried your "offer" will only encourage 'em.

Now you wanna talk about something you want no dealings with-never, EVER go near those NRA credit cards (from a Midwestern bank)! I once got one, they ticked me off so bad with their screwy accounting practices resulting in interest charges (even though I paid the bill in full each month) that after canceling the card I wrote a letter to the NRA telling them how they are hurting the NRA name by being a party to such a deceptive financial institution.

I had the same problem but it was with Guns and Ammo magazine. I watched maybe the first 10 minutes and decided I was bored. Threw it in the DVD collection and forgot about it. Started to get payment letters in the mail. Threw the first four or five in the trash. On the last one I dug for the dvd and sent it back.

I have since let my subscription lapse. I will not renew. Their magazine is all fluff to be honest anyway. :banghead:

I did send an email to the magazine and of course got no reply. :cuss:

They will learn when it hits THEM in the pocketbook. :neener:

Absolutely, +1.

That is where your hard earned membership money that you would think should be used for more productive gun issues is being put to good use by the NRA by trying to essentially trick members out of their money by trying to make them buy products they didn't order and likely don't want.

Sadly, it must turn a profit for them. Despite those who ignore their requests for money, they keep sending out stuff people didn't ask for.

Couldn't the money they spend sending out unsolicited materials
be going towards better things?

When I get all the junk mail every week,
I think.
Man look at all the $$ these companies must have
to blow, just so people can throw away the materials.

I'd rather them lower the prices on their products or services
and STOP wasting millions on stuff no one wants anyway.

One that really has me rolling my eyes is GEICO.
I've been with them for years.
Yet every month I get materials in the mail to join.
Get rid of the little lizard dude ads, the actors,
the unsolicited mailings, and LOWER my rates already.

Yes, however this would be something the board would have to fix.

But I like that song, :(

I've gotten the sam kind of crap from the VFW.
If I didn't ask for it then they can stick it.
I also got some kind of survey crap from the Heritage Foundation telling me I MUST return the survey, either completed or not.
Don't think so Popeye.

Nra solitations

I don't know if you all are dumb but the NRA has to beg for money from its members,as the george soro and other money people give millions to sara and her animals.as stated just except it and call and they will cancel.the cost to them is very small and they contract for this service.there are enuf members who like the product to more than pay for it.I have at times and at times have not payed.I have had the same thing with times life and harliquin brand books.I have been an NRA member since 1939.they are human and make mistakes but they are the only one we have, and they are the best.there are only two others and they coodernate with the NRA. Second Amendment Foundation and JPFO.
This thread seem to be an ongoing thing with some people.:uhoh:

I cant think of an organization I would rather send 10 bucks to.

Its not the way I would go about rasing money, but no one is perfect.

Remember, TOGATHER WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL.

I have received unsolicited books,VHS and DVDs from North American Hunting Club and from Outdoor Life but never from the NRA. Sent most of the books back, how many wild game cookbooks do you need anyway? Kept the tapes and discs, paid for some, not others.

Well I just hate to see organizations waste money.
I also think, when organization do so,
(like sending out unsolicited materials that DO cost BIG bucks)
there is something very wrong with-in the organization.

I mean, doesn't the left hand know what the right hand is doing?

I do like the little Geico dude.
But I bet he's overpaid though. :D

I've posted in the past few days about some of the stuff I get from the NRA--it strikes me as sleazy, but it must work. Usually, it's some package that promises to contact X number of legislators on my behalf, due to some highly pressing matter relating to guns. After they make their pitch, you turn the page and there's always a "for the low, low price of $XX" stipulation. Turns out it isn't some pressing matter, it's just a pretense to cajole you into sending money.

I fully support the mission of the NRA, but I hate it when they use sleazy tactics like this. Just be honest with me . . . tell me why you need more money and what you're going to do with it. I repeat, it's sleazy.

Is the video any good?

If it is actually worth $10, then you might be thankful after you watch it.

Of course, asking for more $ than the price of a movie ticket seems optimistic.

Mine was a Combat Focus video with Rob Pincus. I actually read the enclosed solicitation and it said that if I liked the video I could pay for it and they'd send me more to look at. If I didn't like it I could send it back in their postage-paid mailer or I could consider it a gift and just not pay for it.
