Went to the range yesterday to shoot my Ruger Old Army with Scope. The target was shot at about 30 yards with my conversion cylinder and my 200 gr SWC reloaded ammunition.

I found the scope on ebay with the mount. The mount attaches to the rear sight and one hole has to be driller for the front screw. I have had the parts lying around for about a year or more and finally finished it. Shoots pretty well!

Besides the scoped Ruger, and my second Ruger in the picture, the stainless, I have just bought a THIRD Ruger Old Army. Should have it next week. All of them were bought used for about the price of a new Remington 1858.

In my opinon the Ruger Old Army is the best BP handgun and one of my most fun toys.

Happy shooting!

Drdirk,
Where are you finding them used at a good price? Everytime I check the e-auction sites it looks like they're going for full retail.

I usually look on gunsamerica. You are right, most of the dealers are actually asking ABOVE retail. You have to look for a private seller. They go fast so be patient. Also, I used to just sent the seller a message and made them an offer. I can't remember the exact prices I paid since it usually included ammo or other accessories but it was always below $400 with shipping and accessories. Often they get bought by the original purchaser and with accessores such as balls, loading stand, case and never shot. I don't think any of the one's I bought were shot much at all.

Good luck finding one. They may not be original but they are sure of the highest quality.

i just bought two of them.

$410 shipped for a 7.5" SS ROA, Adj sights, conical mold, flask, capper, 50 balls, 50 conicals, wads, manual, wrench, leather holster, and a beautiful hand made walnut box for it. This one was on gunbroker.com.

$350 shipped for a 7.5" SS ROA, Adj sights, "an extra set of spare nipples, a simple nylon holster, a full unopened 100 count box of Speer lead round balls along with approx 16 loose Speer lead round balls. I have a brass powder dispensing flask, two brass powder measuring devices, a brass capping tool / cap holder and a plastic capping tool /cap holder, a partial bag of wonder wads and a partial tube of bore butter." This one I got from a buddy at rimfirecentral.com.

Just be patient and keep up with all the auctions.

Can anyone recommend a conversion kit for the Old Army?
Would this allow the use of centerfire .45 ammo?

ROA Conversion kit

Get the R&D conversion cylinder from Midway for your Ruger. Yes, it allows the use of 45 Colt centerfire cartridges, but you're suposta shoot only the low-powered Cowboy loads (so-called because the dressup cowboys of today can't abide much recoil, I guess):)

If you look closely you can see that I shot the scoped gun with a conversion cylinder. Good accuracy. No problems with it whatsoever except the slow to reload part. Think about it, the Old Army is one of the most versatile revolvers: Scoped, unscoped, BP or smokeless with great accuracy! Everyone should have at least one ;)

NICE! I just got a 5.5 stainless ROA, with kirst konverter...

It is nice, man... I did my homework, and settled on a good deer hunting ammo, that is safe for conversion cylinders- The buffalo bore "standard load" 255gr Keith softcast bullet. This gives you 1000fps, it is more than enough to get the job done. I also bought some bulk ammo at sportsmans guide for $77 for 250 rounds. I'm going to use the leftovercases to roll my own with... Have you shot and dropped any deer with yours?

Chloe,
Dressup Cowboys? :what:
Most the ones I know won't starve to death in a grocery store.:neener:

Cowboy loads approximate the BP loads of old. It has NOTHING to do with the RECOIL or WHIMPY COWBOYS!

Granted there are some gamers that use just enough powder to get the job done, but the majority load the original loads and some of us shoot original guns.

My 143 year old Remy Civilian Transition NMA with 35 or more Grns BP under a .451 ball will give you enough recoil and a lot of smoke and it'll still get the job done.

I was looking for a scope mount that would fit cleanly on my ROA, since I have a conversion cylinder- any one out there tried this other than drdirk? Also, how accurate would a red dot sight work, instead of a scope? Or could you recommend a scope I can use for this setup? I plan to go deer hunting with this in the fall, because for some reason, I can't shoot too good with the open sights on my 7.5 inch roa, I think my vision is going with my age, lolol... thanks in advance guys!

Personally, I'd go with a Kirst cylinder. I never hear any complaints about timing problems with the Kirst, but I do from time to time about the R&D cylinders. If you have a timing problem, R&D will fix it if you send them your gun. However, I understand that this is taking forever lately, as they are quite backed up. R&D has been having a lot of problems re: turn around time, from what I've been reading.
