My son and I went to the North Maine Woods, camping for 3 days this week.

First day we shot/recovered 7 birds (2-person limit 8), Saw about 14 birds, but either didn't get shots or missed.

Second day 3 birds *rainy, (Saw about 6 birds)
Third day 1 bird misty/rainy. (Saw 3 got 1)

It wasn't the best we've ever done, but we did better than most parties we spoke with.

Son's Wire-Haired-Pointing Griffin worked very well!

Fall foliage was amazing! Photo was taken on the "Golden Road".

Sounds like a good trip!

One of the things I've always loved about the mainland, are the fall colors....been a few years since I've seen them in person.

Bird season here opens weekend before Thanksgiving, and if I dont get stuck working I'll be home on Molokai for bird season for the first time in 18 years.

We approached two stopped pickups and a bunch of guys on the road and recognized one of the trucks, so stopped to see what was going on. Then we heard a shot in the woods! Three guys came out, along with a sub-teen girl dress in lots of orange hunting clothes.

The guys in one truck had seen a grouse and, as they approached, the bird flew up into the woods. The second truck stopped and Cousin Dan noticed a youngster in it, so he approached the driver's side and asked if the kid would like to shoot a bird. Turned out that it was a cute young girl on her first hunt! Her dad said, "Yes", so Cousin Dan guided her to a spot where she could see the bird and she shot it out of the tree...her first bird ever!!!

The girl was beaming as she carried the grouse! Smiles all around, and she had an audience of about 10 of us. The obligatory photos were taken and she'll probably be a hunter for life! Dan is the MAN!

Good job Dan!
Always good when kids get a chance to get in on the action.
Bird seasons always been the best time for that, at least in my experience.

My son took his 17 year-old son up there this week and the boy got his first wing-shot grouse, using the straight-stocked, Remington 20 gauge, 11-87 Upland Special that I gifted him. Finished up getting his daily 4-grouse limit the last day.

My son and I will be going up again Friday-Saturday. The leaves should be coming down a bit, so flying shots may be a "bit" easier.

Son and grandson got back from North Maine Woods last evening. The 17 year-old grandson got his limit...shooting two flying grouse with his deceased grandfather's old single-shot, long-barrelled, 12 gauge, full choke gun that we (lovingly) call "Smokepole"! Very proud, especially since he hasn't shot a lot of clays and never shot a flying grouse until this year!!!
