hey y'all,

Used some urethane 'fast drying'(!) finish and ran into some problems. After a good sanding, I laid a quick, even coat of Minwax fast-drying semi-gloss polyurethane that went on well and looked great. Problem is, it would like to never have dried.

Still tacky after 2 days (can said let dry 4 HOURS, sand, repeat), I left it in front of the fan two more days and it still was not hardened completely when I went to reevaluate.

Is there something I'm missing about prep for and use of polyurethane finish? Do I need to use a heater or the oven or something? Thanks!

If the moisture levels around you are high i have seen it take a week for a floor to dry enough to cross. Thats about 3 days longer than it could take in the dry winter months. Sooooo i does happen. Also it is easy to appy a to heavy a coat and that just slows things down. I chickend out on the last stock i did and spar varnished it but it has worked out very good. If the stink has reduced enough to put up with your stock in the house set it by the frig or maybe next to a boot warmer if you have one. Just need dry air. not really warm, just dry.

I use Varathane myself and it is usually only tacky for about a day. If the finish is hard but still tacky, try sanding it with mid-high grit sand paper (depending on the finish you want) to remove the tacky outer layer.

I use the rub on kind, if you did by brush it might just be thick, the rub on for me over the hot weekend dried in 1 hour, can says to shake before using....with the rub on you get a thinner coat that dries faster, humidity will really slow things down though.
