I saw a good looking used Marlin 1894 in 44 mag for $549.99 at gandar Mt. I belive it is a cowboy model since it has the octagon barrel on it. Is this a pretty good price on it? I may have a $50 off coupon to use at Gandar.

If anyone has this gun any thoughts on it? Is it a good shooter?

That's a bit high for a used one. I bought a used, unfired .44 Cowboy (I know the previous owner) at a local shop earlier in the year for $550 including tax.
The $50 off coupon may make it worth it though. ;)

No, that's too high: Wal-Mart sells the same rifle, brand new, for about the same price. See here for details. I'd say they need to come down by at least $50 for a NIB used gun, and by $100 if it shows any wear at all.

Got a lower price at Gander

I was Gander MT today and they still had the 1894 there. I asked about a lower price and the clerk had to get his manager. After looking up something on the Computer he told him $519.99 as the lowest price. As my kids were terrorizing the store and I was completing the purchase of my new Bersa, I didn't get a chance to talk to the Manager.

I see the tag said Marlin 1894 cowboy limited in 44 mag. I don;t know if there is a limited model. I could not find one on the marlin web site or Gun digest 2005. I see though the gun digest has a retail of $820 for the gun.

I had printed off a copy off a copy of the Wally would price for the gun, to show them, which I didn't have time to show. I told them I would think about it.

One thing I noticed about the Wally world picture of the 1894, is that appears to have no Checking on it. Stocks looks smooth to me. Same is true of the picture of the gun on the marlin web site. Although Gun digest does show the stock checked. Is there a 1894 cowboy will a checked and non checked stock? Or is the picture's just not showing it?

By the way is the $519 a fair price? Or should I bargain more?

Update

Went back to gander Mt. to really take a good look at the gun. Had only glanced at it before. Wanted to really see what shape it was in. First question to the Clerk was on the price, was it flexable. He told me no they don't normally go down on the price, even though the New price at wally world is $557 and they are selling it for $549. I knew from the last time the MOD had they would sell for $519. I had planned to bring this up and get the mod and see if i could bargen down to $509. Or about $50 off new.

The gun looked good on the outside. Some small straches around the rear site, where it looked like someone had been adjusting the site.

However the lever was zip tide shut and i couldm;t see what shape the barrel was in. I asked about removing it so i could check out the barrel and he no they they are not allowed to due that.

HUH???? You want to see a used gunm but will not let me check out what shape the barrel is in. :cuss: Well I gave it back and walked away.

If this was a new gun, no big deal. But a used gun and no way to open the lever and inspect the barrel.

I think this is nuts. I have looked at alot of used and surplus guns and have allways been able to check the barrel out.

I may go back in and talk to the MOD or maybe go buy new somewhere else.

What do ya mean it's a "used gun".... as if to be implying they sell anything else there but used guns?

It practically breaks my heart to see how some gorgeous rifles have had their stocks rammed and dented by customers and their 7 year old kids. If you want to buy a new gun there, you buy it real quick when it first comes in.....otherwise it becomes "used" in no time at that place.

used gun

I am referring to a gun they are selling as used. As in it belonged to someone else, they bought it from them, and they are now reselling it. That's what the clerk told me about there used guns. I am not crazy about buying someone else's gun, unless I can check out the barrel. Would you?

I know I would not buy a surplus rifle without checking out the barrel.

Flyboy,

Sorry I used the opportunity to wise crack and rant about the way Gander allows their new stock to be trashed by bubba and his kid and so everything there is "used".

Back to your topic:
Yes, they're horses butts if they won't allow you to examine the bore of a rifle. Telling you that they weren't allowed to let you look over the gun just doesn't make sense??? (Because "looking it over" is essentially all you're asking to do)

I'd have ignored the clerks reply real quick, and requested for help from the manager. I guarantee you from that point that the clerk would have known I was quietly very miffed. He would have suddenly felt about an inch tall as he knew he was being dismissed. (I have little patience when working with inept people)

But too;
This almost makes me wonder if they have you marked as a pest, and just don't want to assist you? I don't mean to insult you but am only referencing you with what has happened to me in years past. There was a time, when shopping for guns was a major past time of mine to the degree that I've had clerks recognize me and walk the other way to avoid me. When I could get them to show me a gun, they were anything but cordial. (Yea, I'd eventually always buy a gun....after I went there 6 times and looked at about 11 guns. :D )

Now, I don't hardly ever shop at the Gun Stores, and do most of my touchy-feely at gun shows. The gun shops have higher prices, limited selection, and have to have a clerk stand there and baby sit you. (Until Gander came around. Now you man handle and abuse any $2,000 rifle on Gander's racks while the staff totally ignores you.)

I HAVE NOTICED THAT GANDER IN PARTICULAR HAS VERY UNHELPFULL CLERKS. THERE ARE OFTEN 2 OR 3 CLERKS STANDING AROUND BEHIND THE COUNTER CHATTING WITH EACH OTHER. THEY WILL IGNORE ME EVEN WHEN I TRY TO MAKE EYE CONTACT. (Sheees.....and all I want to do is buy the freaking box of ammo and go!) This is very lax management from the top, as I have noticed this in both Houston stores. I admit that they are friendly when you do get their attention, but seem to be just fine with avoiding the customers for the most part. Or perhaps, they avoid me in particular because I look like a blue collar worker. (....they ought to see the balance in my checkbook that hangs out of my pocket. It's probably more then what most of them make all year)

Here's one from www.gunsamerica.com

1894C

$395.00 This is a 1894C it’s a .44 magnum. It’ an early manufacture made before the cross bolt safety. These were discontinued in 1984. It’s in near new condition, but has one scratch about 5" long in the stock, it’s not real bad, otherwise the condition would be mint.
