I've been thinking. Even though I have big hands, I can't actually drop the mag on my XD45 without shifting my grip. Nor my USP45.

I can use my index finger, but my new S&W doesn't have an ambi release. I can switch it to the right side though, but then I'd have to always use my finger to be consistent, and some guns out there don't have ambi releases at all (but all mine do).

I'm trying to decide whether to switch the release on my S&W and transition entirely to middle/index finger magazine releasage, or just deal with slightly shifting my grip to drop the magazine in some guns.

I use my middle finger to drop the mag on the USP. It's very useful, you can keep your sights on the target, and trigger finger stays, hands don't move a bit, let the left hand doing the reload. Would be interesting to see how you hold the USP.

Doesn't seem like the best idea to me. Sometimes it's optimal to change a mag while you still have a round chambered, and using your middle finger could cause you to accidentally hit the trigger.. maybe. I can easily use my thumb to hit the mag release while staying for the most part on target, but then to be fair, I have very big hands, and long fingers. I just sort of tried it out though for the purpose of this post , and it's actually much harder and less comfortable for me to use my middle finger, as it's too long on several of my handguns and I have to bend it back at an odd angle to hit my release. My thumb is naturally right on it, so it wouldn't make any sense.

well, if you're changing your mag, this is usually means you're empty. you can't fire anyway when the slide locked back.
if you have a jamomatic, this could be a problem, but then again, the original poster has a USP45.

I didn't know there was another way to do it, except maybe using your weak hand to hit the button and pull out the magazine. I usually hit the button with my right middle finger (have to twist my grip a little) while I simultaneously bring up the fresh mag.

I have used my middle finger to reach around and drop the magazine on Berettas since I was in the Marine Corps 12 years ago. I don't have to shift my grip and my thumb is not even close to reaching that joker. My Hi-power, and the 1911 I can reach and the CZs too. Thats about it. Whatever lets you keep good grip is best IMO.
