Van's Instant Gun Bluing

Since no one has replied to this, I'll take that as a sign that no one has used the stuff.

Since my post, I've tried it out on a SIG P 220 that I bought used. It was a police trade in, so it had a lot of holster wear. I followed the instructions and applied the bluing. It worked very well, and it's a hard solid bluing. Actually an oxydizing. The color matches the original bluing perfectly.

I did make one mistake, in that I probably didn't clean the gun as well as I should have, and didn't keep it clean as I applied additional bluing. Consequently, I had a few spots that I didn't like, so I've gone after it with some 0000 steel wool, and I'm applying the bluing again.

I expect it to be perfect this time.

Has anyone tried any of the other cold bluing processes that I've seen offered in some of the gun stores?

The cold blues are allright for touchup and some work better than others..In my opinion the best is Brownell's Oxpo blue but that Van's stuff is not bad..I have found that if things are heated a bit they all work better..
Did a Ruger grip frame, bisley, and had great luck..Cleaned it with hot soapy water and while still hot applied the blueing..Couple of coats and it is wearing well and looks good..

I did it exactly as the salesman said, so I didn't heat it or anything. However, the whole time I was doing it, I was thinking that if I heated this, it would probably work better. Next time I try it, I think I'll follow your idea.

Incidently, a few days after I bought the stuff, I was in a gun repair shop, and happened to mention that I'd bought the stuff at a gun show. The proprietor spend the next 20 minutes telling me why it wouldn't work and how the bluing would wipe off within days. And how his $250 dollar hot process was the only way it would work..........................
