Along with looking for a bolt action rifle I am interested in getting a heavy barrel upper assembly for my AR-15 in .223. Say around 20 or 24" with a free floating handguard and most likely a bipod. Twist rate as well. Looking to shoot mid range bullets as well.

So whats the best product going? I see Model1 and others in Shotgun news all the time as well as Bushmaster and RRA but dont know whats the better way to go.

Whats your inputs?

For accuracy in the general manufacturers arena, it's the Olympic UltraMatch barrel. For varmint bullets in the 55gr range your best twist will be around 1:9-1:10. A tighter twist would work as well.

Model 1 is great for plinking but on the cheap side for long range accuracy. Bushy has a chrome lined barrel which is also not for tack driving. The RRA stainless varmint barrels are a nice compromise and pretty good.

Of course you can always go custom with someone like JP Enterprises etc.

Well,

My Bushmaster SS Varmint is sweet and deadly. However, I'm looking into getting another varmint rifle and I found these guys:

I've been reading a lot of positive things about the DoubleStar rifles and I think that they are going to be part of my next AR-15 groundhog, coyote...etc extermination program.

You can check out the custom DoubleStar barreled uppers at:

Here is a little informal review on different HB varmint rifles:

But, this is my opinioin. Rock River and Model 1 also build really good equipment so don't take my word for it.

As for ROT, the BM's 1-9 has been very accurate with 50gr ballistic tips and 62gr fmj ammo. I believe that the suggested range of ammo weight is up to 75 gr. I really haven't had a need for anything heavier than the 62gr so I can't help you with info on the heavy stuff.

I have shot some lighter PMC frangible stuff with a few Groundhog kills @ around 50 yards. I think it weighed 32gr.
