I was looking down the barrel of my Marlin 1894 in .44 mag, and the (ballard) rifling was amazingly shallow. I could hardly even see it! Is this normal? I've seen handguns with shallow rifling, but nothing this shallow.

Micro grooves can be hard to see. Especially when dirty. You may also be too close when looking down the barrel, try moving your head back and forth until you get the best picture.

No, it has 6 lands, and I have a .22 with the microgroove, and it looks much different.

Mine looks the same way, but I always assumed it was the microgroove rifling. Gun shoots fine.
