Ouch. I wouldn't have a problem with that, but I can see why you do. People back then tended to be a little shorter and have a bit smaller hands on average, so the guns of the era were fitted for them. You might consider switching to a very slightly larger beavertail safety that won't compromise the look of the gun.
 
Fortunately, I have two other 1911s, so I think I'll just do the "bandaid" trick to prevent it going forward.
