CMU Public Television Programming and Outreach Manager Linda Dielman knows the importance of gun safety.

She said children are sometimes the victims of the improper disarming and storing of unused firearms.

“In the past couple of months, a 12-year-old shot another 12-year-old,†she said.

Local volunteers and community partners of Project ChildSafe will be spending part of their Saturday distributing gunlocks and sharing information about gun safety.

The group will be giving away free firearm safety kits from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the CMU Public Television parking lot. The kits include a cable-type gunlock, to fit either a large or small bore gun. Each person is asked to limit themselves to four locks.

State Police officer Lisa Rish will be among the uniformed officers in attendance to answer questions.

“We get a lot of phone calls around gun season,†Rish said.

Project ChildSafe was initiated through a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice and is managed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation.
