A woman describing herself as a widow living in a rural part of Vermont contacted me via email today. She would like to buy a gun for protection, but doesn't have any idea what type of gun she should buy. She would also like to receive training, but doesn't know where to go for it.

She lives in Randolph.

Can anyone recommend a gun shop or dealer who will walk her through the choices of guns, and who can offer training?

Thanks for any replies.

I offer NRA Basic Rifle and NRA Basic pistol class's in Enfield, NH about 35 minutes east of Randolph. Have her contact me at NHfirearmsInstructor AT Yahoo dot com. The advantage of taking the class she will be able to shoot about 12 or more different guns to make a more informed decision. The NRA basic Handgun class is 10 hours long. The NRA basic rifle is 14 hours long. I do not sell firearms just offer quality training. I am a Law Enforcement firearms Instructor and have been since 1991.

Thanks for the reply, nhhillbilly. Do you know of a reputable gun store in her area once she decides what she wants?

C'mon, folks. We have a woman here who feels the need to have a defensive firearm, and knows enough to know she doesn't know enough about guns.

No suggestions?

I do not know of any gun shops in Randolph but Barrows trading post in Quchee VT has a good rep..

No idea where Randolph, VT is. nhhillbilly's suggestions works for me.

If she wants, we are having a shoot in Dunbarton (near Concord) on the 5th.

She is welcome to join us. We will have about 50 different firearms there. We can help, and would love to induct a new shooter, but nhhillbilly's offer probably makes a lot more sense.

I can suggest nh gun shops for her, but again, I'm going to assume that this will be a hike...
