Vz58?

Fair design nothing great. Hard to find one in excellent shape that hasn't been "truck bed liner coated" to hide the poor condition stocks.

The principle advantage of this rifle over the AK is lighter weight. It also has the benefit of a bolt hold open as well as being a little more accurate.

I've heard it is quite reliable in the cold and deserts, with the only flaw of sometimes jamming in fullauto fire if the shooter is running or jumping when firing. This is not going to be an issue with civilian shooters.

The bolt locking mechanism is quite interesting because it uses a locking wedge similar to an upside down P38 or Beretta 92, but actuated by a short stroke piston.

From an engineering point of view this is not as sound as Kalashnikov's rotating bolt because it's two parts instead of one. Theoritically a two piece bolt is going to generate more friction, be more suceptible to fouling, and all the stress is going to pile on the linkage of these two parts instead on the lugs like other actions.

The Czechs are better gun builders than Soviets. Their weapons tend to be more refined and have better fit and finish.

Telewinz, he asked about the VZ-58.

Not the VZ-52 you're alluding to. The VZ-58 hasn't really been a common rifle on the market, since they are built using replacement U.S. made receivers. (Their original receivers were destroyed to satisfy import restrictions)

The VZ-52 was the one that got imported in the 90's, with black crinkle paint slathered all over to hide poor wood condition. Two totally different guns, save for the country of origin.

Yeah the Vz58 was essentially a Czech-designed rifle using the AK magazine and round, so they had their "own" rifle not a Soviet model. Considering how well the Czechs do in gun design, this is not a bad thing. Not an overly awe-inspiring rifle, but reliable and well built from all I've ever heard.

imho the Vz 58 is everything the AK Series ever wanted to be.

More ergonomical than the AK ( Safety Lever )
More accurate
As reliable as any AK I ever tired ( and MUCH more reliable than the CHinese AK`s I tried so far )
Much easier to disassemble for cleaning
Lighter ( even compared to a staped AK )

Only drawback IMHO is the way too small pistol grip:uhoh:
