Gig Harbor to regulate gun ranges

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF

GIG HARBOR -- Come tomorrow, the city of Gig Harbor will be the first city in the state to regulate its gun ranges.

The City Council voted Feb. 10 to pass a gun-range ordinance.

The ordinance requires gun ranges to apply for a license and comply with opening and closing hours that the city mandates. The city can also establish safety rules.

Only one range exists in Gig Harbor: the Sportsman Club, at 9721 Burnham Drive N.W. The club is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The ordinance sets range hours as follows: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. On Saturday, ranges can be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to rifle or pistol activities only. No shotgun use is allowed on Saturdays.

The 600-member Sportsman Club has three months to apply for its license.

This isn't suprising, I lived in Gig Harbor for 5 years and the city council there have always gotten their way. More then enough people I know feel the council is crooked and inspired by he with the most cash.

I know it's a bit of a broad statement but my neighbor (and landlord) was denied the ability to change the pitch of his roof several times while a local contractor bought the lot next to him and built a 3 story behemouth of a house.

Mind you this is in the heart of the harbor and partially blocked the views of several homes.

He with the most cash wins.
