I'm shortly going to be looking for two new shotguns, a pump and a semi for practical shooting and HD with largest magazines possible, gonna look at the second hand market first, is there anything I should look out for or be weary of?
I am in the UK, but we are pretty unrestricted when it comes to shotguns and already have a 12g BP SxS, beretta U/O and 3 shot semi auto. so any thoughts?

I thought that repeating shotguns had to be plugged to two in England, else put on a firearms certificate like a rifle. Is that not a lot of bother?

Are Englishmen still allowed to defend themselves without being prosecuted more sternly than the assailant? Reports in the US say not.

I would look first at a Remington Model 870 for a pumpgun, they are sturdy weapons with a wealth of accessories available.

I have shot a Remington 1100 auto in USPSA three-gun events and there is a factory Tactical model with long magazine. The Winchester Super X 2 Practical is getting a good reputation.

Remington 870s or Mossberg 500s. Both are very reliable, easy to find parts for, lots of add ons, easily replaceable barrels for different uses. Lots of used ones around. Proven designs that have been around a long time. Fairly inexpensive but not cheap guns. Slightly different feel for each - get what your prefer.

+1 on the 870 and 500A.

I have one of each, on both floors of the house. Both fine HD weapons, with many accesories available. Don't forget to save some money for ammo to practice with.:D

I love how some people think you can't miss with a shotgun. I get 3 inch groups with both shotguns at 7 yards with 00 buck. 3 inch pattern isn't a wide margin of error. Practice and practice often.

If there are any available in your area, I recommend the Ithaca 37, a pump. This is a very well made shotgun that is almost 1.5 lbs lighter than the Remington 870. It is lighter because it uses fewer parts than the Rem, not lighter parts. Well balanced and a pleasure to carry.

Remington 870 for a pump. Remington 1100 or 11-87 for semi. Both I would trust my life with, and both are excellent hunting/shooting guns.

Mmmmm, looks like I'll have to borrow a 870 and have a play:)

In the UK shotguns with a magazine capacity of more than 2 shells, do have to be held on a firearm certificate instead of a shotgun certificate as do shotgun slugs but as its the 3-gun events I want to try, Ill get them on my license anyway.

This is still questionable  but the laws have just been changed very slightly to allow the use of legally held firearms for defence against a home invader.

If you do, just make sure you shoot them in the front because any injuries they sustain to their back is viewed as them being injured whilst trying to flee.
For example, you are struggling with a BG on the floor and you reach round and stab him the back with a handy screwdriver whilst he strangling you, you are the one likely to be charged with assault because he will plead the you injured him whilst he was trying to escape?!?

amazingly ridulous, but hey, such is the world you have to deal with.

I'm really attached to my Mossberg 500A "special purpose", 20" cylinder bore barrel, holds 7+1 2 3/4" or 6+1 3" magnum rounds. I keep it handy with Sellier & Belliot 15 pellet 00 buckshot (kills at both ends, but if I need it, I want it)...Because these don't use a shot cup, they spread very quickly. Patterns at 30 ft. are about 18-24" in diameter. With the 6+1 that's 105 pieces of .32 calliber lead (at handgun velocities) I can fling out there REALLY fast. Tested these loads and they will penetrate both sides of a refrigerator, or about 5" into a piece of pine. I reallly wouldn't wanna be on the receiving end of those puppies.

+ 1 for 870 12 ga. Parts are easy to come by and very easy to field strip. Reliable, durable and all around good looking shotgun:)
