Need some guidance and information.....want to build an AR15 pistol (.223) without the buffer tube sticking out the back, which means a piston operated system. Also looking for something with a cocking lever on the front of the barrel similar to HK's MP5. Any suggestions where to find the components?

I dont think theres any way to do the ar15 pistol with no tube. Even with a piston you still need a place for the carrier to go. You would have to have a completely different carrier. They do make a side charging custom ar but the lever is not out on the barrel. Thats about all I know.

An AR pistol without a buffer tube would be undesirable IMO. The reason AR pistols can be shot more accurately than a Draco or similar is the buffer tube resting against your cheek to provide stability. Without it they aren't going to be nearly as controllable.

Run the Law Tactical folding stock adapter with a pistol buffer tube if you want it to be more compact for storage, but it has to be flipped out to shoot.

rcmodel.....the RockRiver version is what I'm after, only I wanted to build my own. Was hoping individual parts could be purchased, bu maybe not. Thanks!

I've been eyeballing the Rock River pistol as well. SBR stamp, low profile folding stock, vertical fore grip, new flash hider and an EOTech? Yes please. :)

Wait...you want to get a pistol with no stock, yet you still have to register it as an SBR?

sbr stamp required if he wants a 'low profile folding stock'.

I see. That wasn't the OP.

Yes, that would require an SBR stamp, but could be used as a rifle or a pistol for practical purposes I suppose if had a folding stock.

I'd be just fine with a fixed stock SBR, personally.

Para Ordanance had an AR that lacked a buffer tube although I don't think they make it anymore. I seem to recall there being a short barreled version. I'm sure used uppers turn up. You might even be able to switch barrels on a 16" version although i'm not sure how the gas block is attached. It doesn't have a forward cocking lever either.

How does that RRA pistol work? As in, how is there enough room for the BCG to cycle? And what returns the BCG forward again?

The RAA is a piston gun with the spring located over the barrel. Obviously, the carrier is much shorter than an AR-15 carrier.

I assume the rear of the bolt carrier is essentially cut off behind where the hammer strikes. On a semi-automatic rifle that whole rear section doesn't really need to be there. It's there on a select-fire only to trip the auto sear and give the bolt some more weight to keep the ROF low. The recoil spring is most likely in the front coiled around the gas piston, or the top of the upper where the charging handle would be on a regular AR.

Buffer-less ARs have been done before, nothing new about it.

Arguable, its a bit of a stretch to call the RRA an AR. Certainly it uses a number of AR parts but it has a proprietary upper and carrier. I'm not sure about the bolt and barrel but am curious.

Olympic OA-93 has been around along time. All of the buffer-less designs have a poor reputation for reliability. The Oly is one of the better ones, still not great. To remove the buffer tube you are basically going for a completely different design internally. Externally it may look like an AR-15, but internally it's a different gun.

$1300 for half a gun?

I want to do a single shot version in .450 bushmaster for deer hunting In Silly-nois. We can only hunt with a straight walled cartridge and the pistol has to be a single shot or a wheelgun. I just think it would look cool and the game warden wouldnt know what the heck it was :D

I don't see the benefit in paying alot for an AR pistol, much less paying extra to be bufferless.

Only reason I'd want an AR pistol (or pistol lower) would be to play with short barrel uppers while waiting for tax stamp approval. Or in my case, waiting for the state to legalize short-barrel goodness.

Has anyone involved in this discussion experienced the Extar EXP Extreme, first hand. It looks like something that I might be interested for a Truck gun.
You don't have to have been part of the original discussion if you are interested in adding something.
