I'm looking into getting a 1858 Remington BP revolver from EMF, but I wonder who made them.

Also, will the brass frame hold up or would it be wiser to get a steel framed version?

One last question, who makes the best sub-$200 1858? (Best in terms of how long it would last, availability of parts, ease of conversion use, strength)

Go steel. Brass is much weaker in comparison. Plus with steel you can eventually buy some conversion cylinders that will take standard smokeless cartridges. A brass gun with them is a hand grenade.

1858 Remington .44cal.

EMF sells the Pietta version. I have two steel frame NMA's from them...very happy with price and quality. Their price for the steel frames is a bargain compared to the Cabel's brass frame version.

Steel is the way to go. While I like the pair of brass framed NMA by Pietta, they were my starters...I keep them for style points with milder loads...20-22 gr fffg.

I love my Brass framed 1858 Pietta...................what a nice looking piece. And I've shot it a bunch with no ill affects yet. But Logic dictates that the steel frame will be better for the long haul.

Then again, if I wanted a BP pistol that'll last forever - I'd go with the Ruger Old Army..................THAT bad boy is STOUT!!!!! :D

How about presentation boxes that aren't super expensive? Is the Cabela's price on a steel framed 1858 ok? $240 w/presentation box, $180 without.

Here is a link to the page.

My EMF Rem 1858 steel blue .44cal was 173.90 total with 2nd day delivery...that's cheaper than Cabela's 179 plus delivery.

Haven't seen the presentation cases so I can't comment on their appearance or value. Too many of Cabela's package deals are no bargains when all things are consider. To each his own.

Hope these helped you.

Thanks, but are Cabela's and EMF's the same brand/quality? I see toolmarks in the picture, something I DON'T want in a mostly-display piece that'll see a lot of handling.

EDIT: EMF's price on the 1858 is now $189.90+delivery.

The Cabelas price is about average. Those presentation boxes are not cheap anywhere you can get them......................unless you can make one yourself.

Since I like Cabela's, I guess I'll eventually get it from there. Thanks for the help!
