There's a used Weatherby Mark V in 7mm Remington Magnum sitting on a shelf at an LGS near me. The price is decent enough to be intriguing, and 2019 is finally the year that I am going to quit shooting my friends' rifles and buy myself a centerfire bolt action. You get the idea. :D

Anyway, I'm just curious what people's experiences with the Mark V are. What do you like and dislike? Would you buy one again?

I think they're fantastic. I have one in 378 Weatherby Magnum; a Deluxe model with no brake. I don't think three shots into about 1/2 at 100 yards is too bad.

Actually there is nothing about them I dislike except the bulbous ugly brake Weatherby started using. I prefer the Pendelton brake or no brake at all. I even like the glossy "California" stock. I guess I wouldn't take it hunting where it was likely to get wet.

One of the finest bolt actions out there. Strong as anything, very good barrels and very usable trigger out of the box. 60° lugs make it fast, too. One of my absolute favorites as far as bolt action rifles are concerned. Dislikes? Slightly on the heavy side and not exactly cheap. I'd definitely buy again, or (yet) another.

My brother has one in .257 Weatherby Mag. It is a really fine rifle and they hold value. I wish he would sell his to me. If the price is right don't let it get away from you. Your friends will be jealous and want to borrow yours!

It's a nice action, but not one I prefer for a hunting action (I'll take things out of the Mauser/m70 family by preference).

Still, if it's in good condition I would consider it. The Weatherby cartridges have long throats and can be hard to achieve accuracy with, but the 7mm mag shouldn't have that issue.

My friend has a couple of Model 70s. I haven't seen many of those with synthetic stocks, though, and I am leaning toward that for hunting.

That is a very large caliber. I don't think my shoulder would appreciate that.

It's not that the Weatherby cartridges have "long throats" but rather that Weatherby rifles have generous freebore. I haven't had a Weatherby rifle chambered in anything other than a Weatherby cartridge but suspect their rifles chambered for other cartridges could have generous freebore as well. Perhaps someone else can speak to this.

Generous freebore or not, my 378 Weatherby Mark V is very accurate.

I owned a Whby. Lazermark in .270 WM - very “pretty”, accurate, etc. It was like all the other pretty and accurate rifles on the market - one good choice among lots of good choices.

I'm curious how much the LGS is asking for the Mark V. That would help us vote on whether or not it's a good deal. As I recall, and my memory is foggy, the last time I looked into Mark Vs, they ran around $1500. Is that right?

In my entire hunting career, I've had one gun fail in the field... It was a Wby. Mark V, chambered in .340...

I shot at a moose and when I bolted the gun, the bolt came out of the gun and almost landed in the snow behind me. lol I was quite startled, but I fumbled around, got the bolt back in and made a second shot. The bolt stop had broken and I later found out, at that time, it was a fairly common occurrence.

I bought the gun to use on brown bear hunts, but that experience ended "it's" hunting career with me, right then!!

Some years later, I ordered another Mark V, chambered in 300 Wby. Mag... I was shocked when I opened the box and it had a totally blond "sap wood" walnut stock, with so many knots in it, it was unbelievable! Worse yet, it had a HUGE "filled" knot, going right through the wrist of the stock! What were they thinking??

I sent that one back to Wby. for restocking and sold it!!

There are a few things I don't like about M5's, so they really aren't for me.

It was $1050, if I recall correctly. The owner usually knocks three percent from the price if I pay cash, so call it $1020. Bud's has them listed for $1273. It's not a smoking deal, but it's not bad.

Ask for $999 otd (tax etc included) and call it good.

I can't contribute much to this thread but I owned and hunted with a 270 Weatherby Magnum. The only negative comment I have is that I didn't really like the Weatherby stock when wearing cold weather clothes because a more conventional stock is easier for me to handle. The rifle I had was the most unlucky rifle I have ever owned. I think some witch doctor had put a spell on it. I could carry the damn thing day after day and not see a buck with big antlers. I could change to one of my Winchester rifles and everything was immediately better. I finally gave the rifle to a friend and after years of hunting I don't think he has ever taken a good buck. I never did tell him that the rifle was jinxed!
