I have a BP Uberti 36 1851 that has a wedge pin that I remove with no problem...BUT I have a Uberti 38spl Open Top that has the wedge pin and I can't seem to get it out. It moves to the left until it's flush on the right side, but no further. I hate to muscle it or heaven forbid use my little plastic mallet on it. Is there an easy to remove it...is there a tool for it or a trick?? Any help appreciated!!

Here is what you can do. disassemble a clip clothespin and use it as a pry bar. It works!

I don't understand the aversion to tapping the wedge out with your plastic hammer. I use a rawhide hammer on one of my Walkers all the time (the other one removes with finger pressure). Am I missing something?

The aversion to a mallet removal on an Opentop is because of the screw retainer Fingers McGee pointed out. This is NOT a Walker, nor is any other cap & ball wedge like the Opentop.

If you don't turn the screw to align the flat to the wedge (lifting the screw flange out of the cut in the wedge) you WILL break the screw head. It is a different system than the earlier Cap & Ball wedge, something you have to remember when disassembling, is which gun you have in your hand.

Actually all the Uberti factory conversion Colts use the "Open Top" style of wedge now.

wedge pin

Thanks for the answers! I didn't realize I needed to turn the screw. Glad I came here first to get the facts :) Speaking of accuracy of these guns, I used a B34 target and some WWB and my own brew. At 15yds I got 1-10, 2-9's and at 25yds I got 2 7's. It was the guns first time out...I was impressed considering the sights. I can just about make out the brass post. Pretty gun too! The WWB was 130gr and my own was 158gr. Mine shot a little bit larger groups.
