Well, I just ordered a .22 conversion kit for my Oly AR 15.

I looked at many forums, many threads, read reviews and reports, some bad, most good, about being able to shoot .22 LR through my AR. Its a heck of a lot cheaper than plinking with 223 ammo.

That way I get to handle the AR, its optics, work its trigger, etc. I already have a Ruger 10/22, so I didn't want another "22 rifle"

I am aware that I'll have to do a thorough cleaning before I shoot 223 in it, but I actually like to clean it - I do so while watching TV.

I'd read that lots of shooters with Ceiner conversion kits were happy, but that his customer service sucked - so, I got the Spikes Tactical 22 conversion kit.

I intend to shoot the copper clad 22 bullets, not lead 22s.

If you can think of any other things I may need to be aware of, I'd appreciate you letting me know.

BTW, I thought about getting a .22 upper, but I didn't want to pay that much. Plus, I'd have to be swapping optics and didn't like that idea either.

Yep, it's that simple, as long as it a 223/5.56 AR, anything else you have to change out the upper assy. Takes about 20 Sec's. I got the Ciener kit and some Black Dog Mags and so far it has been flawless, not one missfire, FTF, FTE. (As long as I stay away from remingtom 22 ammo)

btefft, you realize 22lr and 223 ammo won't shoot to the same POI right?

not sure what optics you're using, but i'd suggest a graduated reticle with it "zeroed" to the 223 and some notes about which part of the reticle to use for 22lr. (possibly taped to side of stock or something)


edit: i mean, it might be close enough to hit a coke can at 50yrds, but it also might not be, depending on what ammo

that is why the price of .22 is such a wonderful thing... you can take a lot of time and shots to determine exactly where it is shooting in reference to your .223 zero.

Yeah, taliv, I do realize that. And, frankly, had not come to grips with it.

Your suggestion about the 'modified" graduated reticle makes perfect sense.

I know it will be way off at 100 yds, but wonder how bad it will be at 25 yds or 50 yds.

My ceiner kit shoots to a point of impact that isn't close to shooting 223 out of my ar. At 1st I figured how many clicks on the rear sight and I keep that written down in the conversion plastic case. Now I have a millet sp1 red dot mounted on the carry handle. The red dot is dialed in for 22lr and the standard sights are dialed in for 223. The red dot mount is see through so I can see the iron sights. Mark

I've been contemplating this as well, but I'm leaning more toward a dedicated upper. That way the rate of twist, POI, etc. all are in their rightful place. A much more expensive way to go however.

CoRoMo, that was what I was thinking. Its got to be the better way to go, but, like you said, its also a good bit more expensive,

But having said that, one day in the future, when I'm rolling in doe, I'll probably get one - unless my 22 conversion is doing it for me.
