I think that Rem. 870's have declined in quality and are far from worth the price. The Pres. of Rem. even admits the action is not the best: "it's the pointability" he says. Huh?

By a Mossberg.

I bought new a 20ga. 870 express synthetic 7 w/ 18 1/2 barrel a little more than 2 yrs. ago...It sits under the bed in a case and has long been replaced by a 590A1...It's hardly been shot at all...I don't consider it to be a total POS, but I sure wouldn't ever buy another one...I know there are Remingtons that are said to be awesome shotguns here, but the one I have has definitely soured me towards ever buying one again..I agree...buy a mossberg...Just my worthless .02....

When I was young the 870 WingMaster was an outstanding shotgun and I still own 3 of them. Their quality IMO began to decline in the early ‘80’s. Then came the 870 Express. The 870 Express when compared to early 870 WingMaster, the express is a POS but cheap and serviceable. I have 3 WingMasters and 2 Expresses.
If I were you I would look for a used WingMaster.

i must say that my 870 express mag in synthetic is a pretty darn reliable gun and you can pick one up for under 300 easy and thats gently used thats the way id go...

Boy there is a lot of Express bashing here going on. I am a Remington product person for the most part, and have bought over a dozen brand new Remingtons(rifles and shotguns) over my lifetime and many used ones as well, though I have to admit I have been disappointed in recent years as many of you other Remmy fans have been at the demise in quality; however, the 870 express is still a very serviceable pump shotgun with a proven action that you can pick up used very reasonably. I'm sorry, I'll take a used 870 Express over a new Mossberg 500 or that junk Maverick any day of the week if I want a pump gun. Many talk of the old Wingmaster, well I live in Shotgun country, Eastern Shore of Maryland, and let me tell you, you can't GIVE AWAY a fixed choke, usually full, 2 3/4 chambered pump shotgun here, old 870 Wingmaster, model 12 Winchester, Ithaca or not. People, like the many Waterfowlers around here don't want 'em for obvious reasons if you are a Waterfowler you understand why. Most duck/goose hunters I know want/have the Beretta Xtrema2 synthetic when they go out in the blinds, or the corn fields to shoot snow geese. You wont see ANY of them with pump guns anymore. For upland here unless just for squirell or rabbit, very rarely will you see a pump. My next gun is going to be that xplorer with synthetic that is coming out very soon, I have the 391 Teknys in 20, and let me tell you, that gun is a dream, at least I think it is.
