Greetings,

I have seen that the surplus 5.45 ammo is relatively cheap right now. What is actually available on the open market currently chambered for that round? My roommate bought a nice Romanian AK-74 clone (Clinton special) back in 1999 that he was very pleased with.

Thanks,

Hunter

You are kind of limited in 5.45x39 rifles. Tantals can be had at a reasonable price. WASR-2s are around, but do not hold a great reputation, and appear to be in short supply. Ohio Rapid Fire has Bulgarian AK-74 clones that are around the same price of Tantals. S&W is coming out with an AR-15 in 5.45 as well, but it will be pricey. Alexander Arms is also going to reintroduce their AR-15 uppers in 5.45. Vector makes a RPK-74 clone as well. Other than that there are a few special runs of Arsenal AKs out there and old SAR-2s. Atlantic Firearms has a good selection of 5.45 rifles on their website.

dont get one they are junk!!!! crappy round, crappy ballistics!

*runs and hoards a bunch more 5.45 ammo while it is still cheap and under the radar"

Keep in mind that 5.45x39mm surplus ammo has been cheap for quite a while now, but is unlikely to remain cheap for much longer...

If you don't grab a bunch quickly, you may have missed the boat...

too bad no one chambers a bolt gun for that.Seems like that would make for a nice, cheaply fed varmint, small game, target and/or plinker. not that theres anything wrong with the AK and similar clones, its just already have that covered in 7.62x39, I dont need another similar gun, but a 5.45x39mm bolt gun would fill a hole/niche nicely for me, so I could justify it (yeah, like I cant talk myself into any reason to get a new gun, but I digress.....:D)
