ive ben looking into building a rifle for a while and ben going back and forth with buy another rebuilding one or just building one, so long of the short, i want to build a rifle in 6mmbr for 500 yards and in. it will probley never see a competion but it will spend plenty of time at the range.

things im looking for

reliable
known (i dont want anything so abscure that a gunsmith cant blue print it)
solid (feel means everything)
smooth (with or without work)
adaptiable( ie scope mounts without a lot of work, room for bolt upgrade)
price ( i have 400.00 to spend , on the action)
stock (needs the ability to acsept aftermarket stocks)
looks (not inportant, form follows function)

i know that the ol rem action is great but i wanted to test the waters on the action market and you guys seem very well informed, and have some beautifull rifles posted on here.

also! what do you guys know about pollyhexaganal < god i know i spelled that wrong> rifleing, good bad pros and cons

If you want a rifle/action that most gunsmiths can work on with and an abundant amout of aftermarket availability, R700.

Is cost a factor? If so, what is your projected cost/accuracy ratio?

Either Remington Model 700 or Winchester Model 70 would be my advice. Personally, all my custom built rifles use the Winchester Model 70 action. In any case, what you want to do is buy a used rifle at $350 - $450, and sell off everything except the barreled action. Send the barreled action to a GOOD and WELL ESTABLISHED gunsmith with detailed instructions as to exactly what you want done. I also highly recommend that you load a dummy round with the bullet that you intend to use, loaded to the OAL that you want, and instruct the gunsmith to throat the barrel based on the dummy round.

@ussr,
never even ocurred to me on the dummy round, and ironicly just got back from the ol' usa pawn and gun today and found a rem 700 234, 425 is a bit steep but on the other side of things in the time that i need to save up the money for smithing, barrel, odds ends, i can shoot yotes off the back portch! thanks for the help guys, its refreshing to get information rather than a grammer lesson or thoughs of my age and how dumb i am. sorry...... still a little mad

So true!! I'm doing that very thing with my gunsmith at present. My .260 Krieger barrel arrived this week and if my gunsmith uses his standard .260 Rem reamer, the 140gr A-MAX bullet will be 0.020" off the lands if loaded to AI magazine length (standard unmodified .308 AI magazines). The important thing is that you don't discover this sort of thing once the rifle is built. Do your homework so that there are no surprises.

If you go with a Remington action, you can always upgrade the bolt to a PT&G for a little over $100 and that includes a Sako extractor.

:)

Another option would be to use a Stiller or Surgeon action and forego the blue printing a M700. They follow the 700 footprint and are made from the get go to tight tolerances.

Yes these actions are more expensive but once you add the cost of the action, the truing and blue printing and adding a PTG oversize bolt they are more comparable. The resell value is also greater. Have a competent smith add your favorite trigger, barrel and stock an your're set. Just a thought.

You can also look at the Savage model 10. You can get a complete action for about that price right from the factory, or even MidwayUSA.

as always you guys were a big help again. the more i thought about it the less i want 3, 308's do the 700p is hitting the choping block and im going to have it rebareled for 6mmbr. thanks again guys

I rather like Montana Rifle actions. They are a M-70 type and very reliable as a controlled feed dangerous game rifle. However they are $700 just for the action. http://www.montanarifleco.com/

I just build a 416 Taylor on a surplus $150 Czech VZ-24 action. It was kinda nasty at first, but after an afternoon of some work in the shop it looked much cleaner.
