explanation: i had one oddball box of remanufactured ammo w/ 150gr nosler ballistic tips, i pulled a bullet and it had 46gr of a powder that looks the same as varget, that box of 20 shot better than anything else my gun has ever seen, i tried to duplicate the load w/ varget and 155gr amax, but thats not the right combo. the obvious first answer is go get the nosler's, which i will, but if i only found one or two other powder possibilities i'd buy them too, just to know i had it all covered. the cartridge is 308. these were sold locally by an old timer (now dead) who did custom reloading, this is stuff that were just off the shelf (loaded to a spec., not a gun) so nothing super custom.

point of impact was 2" lower at 100yds w/ the nosler, for the more experienced shooters, that might be a good clue.

I'd be willing to bet the accuracy came from the Nosler Ballistic Tips and not from the mystery powder.

From experience with BT's in 22-250 and .270 Win rounds, I found them to be one of the most accurate bullets commercially available, if not the most accurate. It didn't seem to matter which powder I chose to push them with. Heck, they even look downright accurate before even loading them!

Go get the BT's and use the appropriate powder you might already have, and see what kind of results you get.

You also can't tell a powder by it's looks. Trying to guess which powder is in those old cases won't do you much good. Use established data with the Nosler bullets and that will be your starting point.

Hope this helps.

i realize that, but i know it is not benchmark, as it looks different, i/e same with allot of powders, basically my question is what other powders could it be based on appearance and compatability w/ 46gr. in a 308 case.

if you can chrono any of the good rounds then weigh the charge. you might get lucky and find an exact match. if you get a result that says its powder A and powder A looks like your mystery powder then you might have your answer.

I agree with Mal H.

Until you get pretty good accuracy, you will gain more with a better bullet than a different powder.

46 grains of Varget is an appropriate load for a 150-155 grain bullet in .308. Exactly what I shoot with 155 grain Scenars in MY .308, and a grain below the Hodgdon maximum.
