I travel to ST Louis frequently and I'd like to search out some gun shops but hate to just go down the yellow pages because of all the driving. What are some good gun shops as far as used pistol selection at good prices?

I like collecting smiths and colts so any good shops for those type guns at good prices?

Tim

If you're strictly interested in St. Louis (Missouri), I can't offer anything. However, right on the Illinois side is a good place called Ron and Jo's. The address is:

1562 Frontage Road
O'Fallon, IL 62269
(618) 628 7480

If you live in Missouri and want handguns, obviously that's no help, unfortunately.

Mike's Guns, in St. Charles, has a nice selection of handguns, rifles, and shotguns - several hundred altogether - new and used, at very reasonable prices. Accessories are limited but he does carry some. However, he does concentrate on the weapons.

They are open Tuesday through Friday 10 Am to 6 PM.
Saturdays 10 AM to 3 PM. Tel: 636-949-8764*

From the St. Louis area:
1. West on I-70 (about 1-3/4 mile after crossing the river) to 94 (First Capitol Dr.)
2. SouthW on 94 (about 1-1/2 miles) to Pralle Ln.
3. NorthW on Pralle (about 1/8 mile) to S. Old 94
4. Right on S. Old 94 (about 3/8 mile - guessing) to Mike's. (Domino's pizza is right next to the gunshop.)

*If you do a Google search by the phone number, it will be listed as Kevin's Guns - the former owner several years ago.

Enjoy!

What's the name of that joint over by Northwest Plaza? Nice selection of C&R stuff... Didn't seem overly friendly tho - Of course, I only spent about $300...

If you're into accuracy, and can drive a little west, Ron Hoehn's candy store is at the St. Louis Benchrest Rifle Club...

Mid-City Guns

On the Saint Charles Rock Road, just east of Lindbergh, south side of the street.

I'll second Mike's Guns. Good place.

Also, the Nassau, in Saint Charles - pistols are in the back room.

There's also:

Kirkwood Outfitters on Manchester 100 yards East of Lindburgh.
On Target in Valley Park just off Marshall and 141.
Denny Dennis in Fenton on old Gravois by the River.
Top Gun in Imperial behind the Post Office.
Mid America on Gravois at Tesson Ferry.
Graf's and Dunn's in St. Charles.
And others

Thanks guys

I'll check them out next time I'm in St Louis.

It's been a long time since I've visited there, but when I went, Kirkwood Outfitters did not sell used guns at all. If I remember right, this was a very small shop that really only stocked a dozen or so upper-end shotguns and fly-tying and fly-fishing supplies. If you want any gun but a nice-looking shotgun, you won't see it there--but if you want fly-fishing supplies and you're near St Louis, you really should make the effort to visit them.

Most other shops around the area are "general", meaning rifles/shotguns/pistols of all types, usually with some used selection. The Bass Pro in St Charles only has sporting rifles and shotguns, but if you're near, there's a "real" gun shop just up the highway a bit North.

I bought a lot at Kirkwood Outfitters this year and they have always had racks of new and used rifles and shotguns and at least 4 or 5 cases of used hand guns and cases of new hand guns. They also have many accessories. I have never seen any fishing equipment ever.

If you had to only pick a couple

I'll probably only have time to hit 2 or 3 and what I'd like to find is the largest selection of used (and maybe collectable) pistols at good prices. I like finding blued smiths and colts. Really kinda looking for a 6 inch model 57 right now. But like everyone else, a certain gun that I wasn't even looking for has just jumped out of a case and grabbed me by the windpipe and demanded to be taken home.

I'm not really looking for the polished outfitters that carry nothing but new stuff I can get anywhere, anytime.

Oh yeah, lay-a-way is always a nice touch too.

For variety, my first favorite shop is Denny Dennis' sporting goods in Fenton. The store is primarily hunting/fishing oriented, but the gun department has always had an interesting variety to peruse, including quite a few used. Their prices seem reasonable, too.

Second stop is Mid-City arms on St. Charles Rock Rd. near Northwest Plaza. It's pretty nondescript from the outside and can be a bit hard to notice, but it's right next door to Rodao Drive and that is a bit more eye-catching (Rodao Drive is an *ahem* adult-interests store). They deal primarily in collectible arms and have some nice specimens, but they also deal in mainstream stuff. In addition, there is usually an interesting mix on the gun rack in the middle of the store to fondle. Contrary to the previous poster, I've always found the people there to be friendly and helpful. Maybe they were caught on a bad - or busy - day.

I live within a mile of Mid-America on Gravois, but tend to avoid the place. This is my opinion only, but my personal experience is that their prices seemed on the high side and the staff was less than helpful. It's been a while since I visited, though, so things might be different. What has kept me away was that I called once to inquire about transferring a shotgun purchased out of state, and got an earful of griping from the owner about how he can't run his business on $35 transfers (although he chose to be listed on Gunbroker as a transfer FFL). I respected his decision and have not given him any business since.

I haven't visited Mike's guns in St. Charles, but have been to Nassau. I don't know about their political bent, but they've been helpful to me in the past and had a decent selection of arms.
