I have been looking at a remington model 788 in .223 thats is in 90% condition. I do not know much about the 788's, who has experience with them and what do you think about thier price of $450 With a simmons scope and a textured stock.
OH

I had a Remington 788 years ago in .243. It was very accurate, but IIRC it was a somewhat cheap rifle. It was stolen out of my truck.

Great rifle but $450 seems like way too much for what it is, especially with a cheap scope.

the 788 actually had a very good action, and it was slightly cheaper than the 700 if I recall. They discontinued it, becuase of this, because dudes kept buying the 788's and tweaking them, or building their own rifles off of them, instead of buying the newer 700 action rifles. From what I understand.

Quite accurate for a stock rifle especially a budget model. The mags are not so common anymore. I wouldn't spend $450 on one though. That'd buy a savage and a decent stock for it. Savage also has a good reputation for accuracy out of the box.

Ugly as sin, discount rifle that often outshot the 700

Remington was probably a little annoyed when they realized the flagship rifle was upstaged by a bargain basement model. They replaced it with, I think, the Model 78 sportsman. That was a decent rifle that looked a lot more like the other offerings in the 700 line up.

I didn't realize they were that much a collectors item now. The price is probably too high. Shop around.

I do remember that in about 75 or 76 or 77 they sold for about 90 to 95.00 +
tax. They quickly earned a reputation for out of the box acurracy. I see $400+ prices in my area. Old 112

The real beauty of the 788 is in it's lock time, time between trigger pull and bang. The shorter lock time translates into better accuracy. The trigger pull was terrible, but by simply shortening the trigger spring in very small increments, a very crisp trigger at 2-3 lbs pull can be obtained.

I've had the .222 since they first came out. It cost about $80 as I recall.

It was meant to be a very cheap rifle for people that didn't want to pay the price of the more expensive Remington's. That's exactly why I bought it.

It was discontinued because it was to successful. It turned out that the rifle was super accurate. I actually use to use colored thumb tacks for my 100 yard bullseyes and always hit the tack in 1-3 shots.

What I heard at the time was Remington stopped making the 788 because as the word got around what fine little rifles they were it was cutting into the sales of Remington's expensive rifles.

I was shooting mine just the other day. Best $80 I ever spent.:)

I had a left handed 788 in .308. Sold it almost 20 years ago and still regret it. Nice little rifle and accurate to beat the band.

Big mistake

I really wish I had mine back. I wish I had my mod. 600 back too. I have never seen or heard of a 788 that didn't shoot good.

Thanks for the info I think I will be getting an fp in 223 but I may look at this gun some more.

Remm 788's.

I have a Rem 788 in 223 with the open sights removed and Control Bases and rings on it, holding a decent 3x9 scope. It is just about the most accurate center-fire rifle that I own. I have a couple of spare mags for it, and they are for sale all the time on E-bay for about $25. Not to bad. :) I also have 2 of the Rem 788's in 30-30 that are great shooters!!! :) These are both dedicated cast bullet rifles and will handle factory equivalent loads with ease. Deer can't tell the difference either!!! I'm always on the look-out for 788's in my area. Great rifles!!:D

my pop bought the 788 16" carbine I have back in 79' for around a c-note,

nice little rifle, triggers always been light for a hunting gun though, breaks right at 32oz.

I started out with a 788 in 22-250 and it got me started as a reloader. I really enjoyed the rifle and I let it slip away during a weak moment.

I have a left hand 788 in .308. It's a great rifle and I've found that remington is making replacement mags again. They sell for $17.00 at the local sporting goods store. A 788 runs $300-$400 dollars at most gun shows around here.
