I have sent an email to S&W to find out when my Sport was made, but in the interim, I'm wondering what "revision" it is (to borrow computer terminology) as it has some features the current ones don't have.....

It has the 1/8 5R Melonite barrel
It has a Magpul MBUIS rear sight
There appears to be an aluminum heat shield under the front hand guard

I know the 1/8 5R barrel dates it as an earlier model
The MBUIS I thought was used on newer models
Newer models apparently don't have heat shields under the front hand guard either

I did buy it used, so another possibility is the previous owner could have installed a MBUIS and heat shielded front hand guard on an older model, but this one looked essentially unfired....

The way you describe it, I would have to say it is the first version Smith made. Fine rifle. I came very close to buying one, but bought the 1/7 chrome lined barrel M&P 15 MOE ( first version as well) instead.
It has been a fine rifle as well. Well over a 1000 rounds of cheap Russian steel case ammo and at least that much with brass cased and never the slightest problem.

It's probably not a first gen. The first gen had an A2 style rear sight, and the hand guard wasn't shielded at all. I would guess 2nd gen when switched to the MBUS rear sight, but were still using the 1/8 twist 5R rifled bbl. Of course, as you note, you bought it second hand. So we can't say for sure it's not a first gen that the owner made two easy and inexpensive part swaps on. I wouldn't worry about it either way. I'd just be happy you got the 1/8 5R bbl, and not the new standard bbl S&W quietly transitioned the Sport to.

Interesting... I have one of the first Sports available. As ugaarguy said, mine had an A2 rear sight on a removable carry handle. Be very happy with that barrel - they're going to be sought after one day! I've found mine to be at the very least as accurate as my Colt and older SGW, and easier to clean because of the profile of the lands in the barrel. Mine is also finished better than my other ARs.

Mine has no heat shield or magpul parts as it was from the factory.

Enjoy! Mine has also never failed to function perfectly.

I'm not familiar with the generations of the Sport, but you definitely got a pre-2013 with the 1/8 5R rifling. Excellent rifles for the price.
