What gun oils are best and WHY...notice the emphasis on why

sometimes it makes me grin to see thread revivals from months ago. When I saw this thread today my thoughts were "I have a thread with almost the exact same title." Then I realized it was my thread for like 4 months ago.

Back when I was doing a lot of competition shooting the answer to the what is the best lube question was "Whatever they gave out free samples of at the last big match." Why, because it's free. They will all work pretty good if you just use them.

What do I use to dispense it? Small plastic bottle with pointy cap and cap on the pointy thing. Or empty bottle that liter fluid comes in.

For wiping down, the large plastic box that 100 or 200 .22's come in with a piece of folded ShamWOW. See there really is a use for the ShamWOW.

While it is a valid question, I think the whole gun lube thing is a bit overblown. I've used Tetra, Tri-Flow, RemOil, CLP, Hoppes, and others and everything has run fine. Unless your putting 1000s of rounds downrange shooting Class III stuff I don't think it makes much of a difference. I wouldn't use anything (except maybe Mobil 1) that wasn't formulated for firearms to be safe but I think under "normal" usage it's all well and good.

There is no "best"

There is no "best", some are good others are better but their is no best. Usage will play a factor as well as environment ,desert or tundra, salty gulf coast air or Pacific west coast,etc.... I think overall just pick what YOU like best and go with that. We all have our favorites, mine are dry lube spray,Remoil and W-40 as a post cleaning,pre-lube. If your firearm is functioning properly and isn't wearing prematurely then I'd say stick with what you are using.

Another vote for Corrosion-X. I use the aviation grade, but they are all similar except the heavy duty which has more of a cosmoline consistency. It penetrates, it sticks, it passivates surfaces, and it lasts.

Dupont Krytox is a great grease to prevent galling for stainless on stainless connections.

These are both specialty products not marketed for general lubrication and they are somewhat expensive. Corrosion-X is designed to prevent Corrosion and just happens to have great penetration and slickness, even when wiped off. Krytox is all synthetic fluorocarbon for use in liquid oxygen environments and coincidently is the best anti-galling lubricant for stainless-stainless bearing surfaces.

Someone mentioned Weaponshield. Ive used that too and I think it preforms much like Mobile 1. I think the Mobile 1 seems to leave a slightly more slippery feel on the metal. Both are superior to CLP in my opinion. With Mobile and Weaponshield the carbon seems to wipe right off when I clean my guns. No scrubbing at all. CLP seems to let the carbon get crusty and deposit in the nooks and crannies around the weapon. My guns have been a cinch to clean since I switched to Mobile and Weaponshield. I have a small bottle of Weaponshield, when it runs out I'm just going to refill the bottle with Mobile 1. I still have a quart of Mobile 1 that should last me a few years.
