I'm currently reading Michael Connelly's series of books surrounding the character Harry Bosch, who is a detective 3rd grade in the LAPD. The books are very well written, and as far as i can tell exhaustively researched (Connelly used to be a crime reporter in L.A. so maybe this has something to do with it). Anyways, Bosch is said to carry a smith and wesson 9mm, but they never give specifics. I know that the LAPD at one point carried the beretta 92 and also they seem to have had a switch (or option to switch) to glocks sometime a few years ago. Interestingly, they seem to allow a bit of leeway in regards to a sidearm as opposed to simply stating what the officer has to carry. I'm pretty sure that the S&W 5906 was the gun in question, but if anyone has any more information it would be greatly appreciated. Also, does anyone know if the detectives are issued or allowed to carry firearms that the Patrol Officer's aren't? Thanks in advance.

I know they don't authorize the use of the Glock 21 and if you carry a back-up revolver, it must be DAO(Centennial models perfered, but regular snubs with the hammer spur shaved down). The last time I was in Parker Center, I saw Berettas and Glocks more than anything and a few plain clothes officers/detectives had Smiths. I didn't see H&K or Sigs but that does means they can't carry them.

Makes you wonder what kind of city you're in when you see Motorcycle Officers with pistol grip shotguns locked on their bikes!!!!!!

AFAIK...

During the 1980s, the LAPD switched to the Beretta Model 92F. In the 1990s, it was upgraded to the Beretta Model 92FS. After the North Hollywood Bank of America shootout, patrol officers were approved to carry the S&W Model 4506. Early 2000s, LAPD authorized the Glock Model 22.

Since it's formation, LAPD SWAT used "custom" Colt Government Models and replaced them in the 1990s with customized Kimber Custom II.

LAPD SIS were authorized the usage of S&W Model 4506 during the late80s.

This is a common SOP for SoCal LE motor officers.
