Dear All,
I just picked up a Marlin 336 Lever action, and, while the stock sights are ok, I have heard that peep sights provide better aiming ability- I have shot my buddy's father's Garand, and admit, I like the peep sight design. Is there anything out there like that for a Marlin 30-30? I have also tried the Tru-Glo inserts on plain iron sights- does something like that integrated with a peep sight exsist?

Williams FP-336. Check it out on midwayusa.com. Looks great, shoots great, easy to adjust. If you need to do it on the cheap, the 5d-336 works well too, just no click adjustment.

Both Williams and Lyman make peep sights for the Marlin 336. I have the Williams FP-336 set, which uses the rear scope mounting holes for the peep sight, and includes two different fiber optic bead front sights.

The sight picture is greatly improved vs. stock sights. Unfortunately I haven't shot my rifle with them yet.

If your thinking about cheeping out and going for the 5D....save your pennies and get the FoolProof. MUCH BETTER! and you can get it as a package with the matching FireEye front sight.

If your 336 is an older one (pre 1981 I think) it will have the tapped holes on the left side of the receiver. You can get the FP for either config., but if you have the side holes, you're better off to use them, as it mounts slightly lower than the top mount version.

Also....though I've didn't handle it, I've seen a photo of a 336 with a FP mounted on top and it hung off the tail end of the receiver, requiring the use of the hammer extension.

I sold my 5D and will replace it with the FP/FireEye combo. I'm also planning on buying the small hole aperture (must be purchased separately).

I prefer the Fool Proof over the Lyman. My favorite is the sadly discontinued Redfield.........Any will serve you fine. Essex

Yes. Williams Gun Sight Co sells a set, consisting of a receiver mounted peep, along with a proper height FireSight front blade.
You can choose from either a FoolProof peep, a 5D peep, or WGRS peep - at slightly differing price points.

I've got the Williams FoolProof mounted on three rifles and a 5D on a Marlin 39. I've used these sights since 1966 and have found them to be well-made, reliable and the perfect set-up for quick shots on deer in timber and brush. I do prefer the FoolProof over the 5D but there is a substantial difference in price (but no difference otherwise between the two with the exception of the FoolProof's click adjustable feature which the 5D lacks) and, if you don't plan on changing the settings after the sight-in, the 5D is a good value.

Williams also makes a dovetail fire sight set up for the 336. the work like the stock sights but are made with "glowing thingies" as my stepson once said.

thanks for the advice all!

Dear All,
I appreciate your advice, once again. Thank you for helping me out- I will get a new sight on my 30-30 soon, as soon as the local gunsmith can order it.

The Williams peep sights are very good, but the Lyman sights are truly top of the line. And with the Lyman, you can screw out the aperture, and have a ghost ring.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I've used both the Lyman and the Williams and have found the Williams to be more compact and at least as well made. I prefer the Williams sight adjustment system- more precise and harder to get out of adjustment once locked in (ergo, "Fool Proof"). I do like the Lyman "quick detachable" feature, though the Williams is not difficult to unmount.

One cannot go wrong with either brand.

If you really want a peep sight I think the williams or the lyman will serve you well. Now, if you're gonna use it for deer hunting, might I sugguest a low power scope. Most deer are shot in low light conditions and this is where a low power scope will fill the freezer.
