Neighbor is moving and can use cash, so I offered to relieve him of his 45 springer, it's the basic GI model, I doubt he ever shot it, he really is more of a buyer than a shooter. I figured $500 would be a good deal, "knowing what I know about used guns". He is pretty sharp, but doesn't follow gun prices, and we have always been friendly. So I didn't want to low ball him too much, but I also have been in the market for a CMDR, "which this isn't" but I know the guy is fanatical with his stuff.
Is that a fair offer? He did accept it, but until I actually have the gun, who knows?

Assuming the gun is in good condition, I would say you did OK. Springfield GI pistols are very nice basic 1911's, and sold new for around $500-$600

I would say that you definetely did`nt lowball Him and long as He and You are both happy then it is a good deal.
if, after posting in here and reading the comments, that You decide that You would`nt want to pay that much then tell the seller , I Just ca`nt afford to spend that much, all I have to offer is 450 or whatever price You`d like to get it for.
I have handed a friend cash money and took them along when wheeling and dealing, told them I am going to offer XXXXX for whatever, if they do`nt take it,I am going to ask if I can borrow XXXX.
I then tell the seller, this is all that I can afford to pay, if they wo`nt take it, or if they come down on the price then look over to the friend and ask if they have XXXX amount that You could borrow.
By telling them that is all I can afford to spend is not a lie either, i`m a broke sumaneegun.
Any how, that system has worked quite affectly for Me.

I think the price is OK, definitely not a lowball, depending on condition, I think you both did OK -

yeah you might have been able to get it a bit cheaper somewhere/online, but you likely had better info about the history of the item, and didn't have to drive around to meet a seller or deal with FFL/transfer fees, etc.

yeah, your neighbor might have been able to sell it for a bit more more somewhere, but he likewise didn't have to deal with taking time to meet with a buyer, or dealing with FFLs, or negotiating with some stranger.

So it all evens out in the end, with a minimum of hassle. Enjoy your GI model, and keep on a lookout for that Commander!

Considering SA has stopped making GIs to focus on other 1911 models, $500 is a good price for a gun that is in great condition. I think you did well, especially when you figure no sales tax.
