I'm reading the latest American Rifleman and there's a short article on the Kimber Rimfire Target... in .17 Mach 2.

A TARGET pistol in .17 Mach 2? I just don't believe it's as accurate or inexpenive to shoot as a normal .22 Rimfire. Do you? Can you imagine anyone really breaking that puppy out at a match?

And the round itself does its best work out of a rifle... as a light varment piece, I'd think. This pistol just seems like an odd duck. Am I mistaken? :)

my guess (and its just a guess) is they are trying to capitolize on the .17 fad that seemes to be up and coming and Kimber has a well known name with a high price (most people think, and are fairly often right) that name+price=great gun. a small bullet moving fast as hell, is a good potential seller as a target gun (small, low resistance, hight velocity=good accuracy)
no, i'm sure its more expensive to shoot than a regular 22 and the difference in accuracy (if any) will be confined to 'hard core' competition shooters as opposed to the rest of us, where our own 'faults' will negate it and make it unnoticeable.

I don't know about IDPA, IPSC, and the rest of the hop-jump-shoot organizations, but I'm reasonably sure the minimum caliber for NRA bullseye is .22 long rifle.

I have a hunch the .17 rim fire rounds are primarily shot by plinkers, and probably not in great volume, since they're rather pricey. I'm told they make for excellent small varmint shooting, but I doubt many shooters actually do much of that.

Its been so long since I fired a BB gun, but if I remember correctly (and my memory isn't what its used to be) isn't a BB a .17?

Yes, it sure is... .17 is also the most common size for air rifle pellets.

ps BB guns are still a lot of fun, btw... ;)
