What kind of load does a 21" RS Deer barrel for a R1100 like?

I've finally decided on a autoloading shotgun (Bout time) unless this one gets sold before I snatch it up. This would be my HD shotgun and it comes with a 28" barrel but I plan to also pick up a 21" Deer barrel with rifle sights at the same time. Would the 21" work with buckshot and slugs reliably? How accurate would this be with rifled slugs?

The shorter barrel will work just fine with heavy loads. It may not function with light field loads. I know an 11-87 with barrels shorter than 26" are desinged for heavy loads only. The 1100's may work better with light loads since they do not have to compensate for 3" loads like the 11-87.

21"

The answer to most of your questions is Yes. For some of them, it is "it depends on you."
The 21" deer barrel is a smoothbore, yes? If so, it is probably going to be reliable with both buckshot and slugs. The barrel is cylinder bore and thus the buckshot pattern will open more quickly than a choked barrel.
If you want to make sure of the tightest pattern, try Federal's FliteControl loads.
How accurate would this be with rifled slugs?
That depends on you at least as much as the slug that you choose. When I test a shotgun for slug accuracy, I buy ten each of as many slug loads as I can afford and then I shoot them from a rest, first at 50 yards and then, if any are particularly promising, at 100 yards.

Cylinder bore = no choke, is that right? Would it be worth it to get it threaded for a choke?

If your 28" barrel is threaded for choke tubes, I wouldn't bother. The 21" Remington 1100 slug barrels are Improved Cylinder and make a handy brush/upland gun as is.

Mine will print 1.5 inch groups at fifty yards with regular Federal slugs.

I was thinking about how Buckshot would perform with the 21" barrel. I load my own buckshot so I don't have no fancy flight control stuff. The cutdown 18" barrel I have for my 870 (the gun that is being traded off for the 1100) has a very large pattern with buckshot at 10 yards, above what I read about here for a pattern. Haven't actually measured it so I'm not gonna bother and estimate.

The 21" barrel will give you the exact same patterns as the 28" barrel assuming both have the same choke in them. Most 21" barrels are IC and that seems to give decent patterns with buckshot. If it is true cylinder it might be a bit more open than I'd want for a hunting gun. Great for SD however.

I don't know if you picked up the barrel yet. I have one - sold my 1100 (not sure why..)

Drop me a note.

The Remington factory 21" RS 1100 aftermarket barrel comes with an improved cylinder tube and a rifled tube .The rifled tube installed is the bomb for deer hunting with the new Sabot slug loads. I use such a rig when going back to Ohio during deer season. The Imp cylinder tube works very well for buck shot or nn sabot slugs. The "slug " barrel has a 2 3/4" chamber and the gas port is sized to work well with most loads, unlike the 1100 3" barrels.
