What say you on this King Cobra?

I have an opportunity to buy this King Cobra. It has no rear sight because there was an optic on it that left some marks. It comes with the optic BTW but I would likely set it up as stock. Other than these issues it seems to be in very good condition. And I've already found a rear site should I decide to go for it.

I'm looking for opinions on polishing out the mounting marks. The ones on the top are the ones I'm most concerned with, not quite sure how that would be restored to it's matte finish.

To my eye, that is not a polish job, that's a simple bead blast job. If there are no actual indentations, it should just be a matter of reabrading the surface to match the old or even easier, reblast the entire top. Kinda like patching stucko.;)
 
Basically what they said...The top can be bead blasted to repair those marks. The marks on the frame/barrel can be polished out and then blended back with a Scotchbrite pad.....Given it needs some attention and a sight, I wouldn't give more than about 500 bucks for it.
 
How much might I expect the bodywork to run me? I plan to tally up the money I'd put into it and take it off his asking price of 750 and make an offer.
 
You should be able to get the top strap beadblasted for well under 50 bucks. The finish resto is pretty much a trial and error thing you can do yourself.
 
So I guess I'll offer him 600 and see what he says. That's for me buying a rear sight and getting the top redone. Based on what I see on Gunbroker it seems like a pretty good deal. Plus he's going to let me do layaway.

Would it be a bad idea to have the whole thing refinished in satin?
 
I'd just put some sights on it, hand polished with Mother's and go to shootin'. I probably wouldn't worry about the top strap until I stumbled on a buddy that would blast it for free..LOL.
 
I agree about putting the rear sight back on it and shoot the wheels off it. It probably will never be collector grade but they sure are fine shooters. If you do decide to have it touched up I would pay to have the whole gun redone or chances are it won't match.

Cosmetic issues aside, I would say if the price is right you should get it, put the rear sight back on, and take it out and shoot it as much as you like. As far as the scratches and scuff marks are concerned, I would try some of the suggestions offered here by other members, and if it doesn't work out, consider having it professionally refinished.
 
I just couldn't pay $600 for it and I have a blast cabinet. Unless the optic was a $300 Leupold 2x that I could use on something else.

but I would do $600 on it with the scope, if the scope has substantial value, because I would think of the gun as costing me mebbe $450

but I wouldn't sweat the minor cosmetics, just put a rear on it and shoot the wheels off it

However, if thinking to pretty it up and hold for "investment sale", might be worth it
the escalation cost factor on any old model Colt or S&W sometimes takes my breath away
still, not-so-pretty but great shooters are not all that rare yet

guns that are rightly used (shot a LOT), pick up a trivial scratch now and then
gives 'em 'character'
 
I think guns are cheaper back east. Six bills seems reasonable to me here in AZ. 450 would be a used plastic here. But at any rate, I'm mulling it over. There are revolvers I want in the same range that wouldn't need anything, and I can hold out for my Python.

Go buy the thing, get the sites put on it , go shootin'! I know what you're after, can do those things as you get the monies. That isn't marked up that bad, get it and be done with this thing!
 
I'm not questioning you guys, and I've decided to pass on this one because I think I can do better, like not having to buy a rear sight, and getting a 4" like I really want, but where do you get these prices from? When I look at comparable items on auction sites, they are in the same range or more.
