What Should My First .45 be?

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Are there any decent 4'' 1911s out there that go for around $500-$600 instead of $1000+?

If I get a 1911 I will get the commander size, sense I want to be able to conceal carry it also. That's another reason why I like the p345. It is a surprisingly compact 8 round .45.

I was going to suggest a Sig Sauer P220 but you want American so I'd suggest a 1911.

Well, the later models are essentially American (the slide assembly and side mounted mag release) at this point. I guess you could say its a "hybrid" type weapon. I guess they are designated as, for instance, P220 E (European) or P220 A (American)

Anyway, I would recommend the P220, but I would avoid the current batch with the internal extractors. Ive heard that this model is having FTE issues relating to the current design. My P220(A), however, has an external extractor (I bought mine just before Sig went back to the internal design) and has performed flawlessly and is very, very accurate.

1911's are nice though.

Call Centerfire Systems. They "did" have a 4" RIA listed, but I don't see it now. It was a GI config, but I've seen photos of a 4" with the Tactical config (beavertail and combat hammer). http://www.centerfiresystems.com/1911.aspx

They also had some really nice 3.5" RIA Compacts, but I don't see those either. Call them and find out.

Your first .45 ACP should be a CZ 97B. $640 including shipping. Or you can get an EAA witness Elite Match in .45 ACP for under $500 including shipping. The Elite Match is a custom job and has an excellent trigger. Both guns are 10 + 1 rounds.

I'm gonna say a EAA Witness.
I've had it for around 7 months now and it keeps growing on me. I don't shoot it much, it stays loaded and has took many trips hunting and outdoors to be my companion for the day.
I'd love to get one of their upper end models. Smexy guns :neener:

I'd like to say 1911, but if you are on a budget I'd check out the XD45 if I were you. Either service or compact model, both with the 4" barrel. Lots of bang for your buck.

If you have a little more money, I'd look into a H&K USP compact .45:) You can't put a price on quality!
