What size of primer is needed for 45 LC?

Depends on what powder you are using.

Extruded or flake, medium speed, regular primers are fine.

Spherical or ball, slow burning, magnum primers are usually recommended.

They are all large pistol.

Use what your Reloading Manual data tells you to use.

You do have a reloading manual don't you?

Ditto.

.45 Colt uses large pistol primers. either standard or mag, depending on the load. Get that manual soon. :)

Just buy Winchester and you won't have to worry about it...

Since your revolver is the light framed Mountain Gun, I really doubt, and advise against, using H110/W296. If you had a Ruger Redhawk in 45 LC then you could use loads that equal or exceed 44 Magnum pressures, and with H110/W296 you need to use a magnum primer. But it would be poor judgement to try to do that in your N frame.

I have loaded load Unique (flake) or AA#5 (ball) powder, to to 800-850 fps with lead bullets. I have used WLP, CCI#300, and Wolf standard primers with excellent accuracy. You don't need magnum primers for standard velocity ammunition in a 45LC.

Like said above, the .45 Colt usually takes a standard Large Pistol Primer or also like said above you could buy Winchester WLP and be done with it. I'm happy with the results I get when using Winchester WLP primers.

CAUTION: The following post includes loading data beyond currently published maximums for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The High Road, nor the staff of THR assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information.

I shot a double 454 load with 45 Colt brass in a break action 410.
I used 40 gr H110, 405 gr Cast, and a large rifle primer.

Use what your Reloading Manual data tells you to use.

You do have a reloading manual don't you?

I would probably follow the above advise. If you have to ask this kind of question, I would follow recipes by the book until you have enough experience to start proper experimentation.

Cheers Mate.
