What substitute hobbies while living in anti-gun countries?

If Japan is in your future, I can attest that they are quite serious about Airsoft. I was wandering around on foot in Kyoto and found a shop that had imported real-deal Aimpoints and GG&G mounts.

I guess you could say their sign drew me in...

It all depends on what nation you will be at. It seems that airguns are rather common in parts of the world that severely restrict firearms ownership. I had bought a copy of a British publication on airguns and it had all kinds of info on the various types as well as articles on hunting small game and vermin with the airguns.

Archery may be a possibility as well.

I too have thought of living and teaching overseas in the past, but I love the outdoor opportunities that we have in the US too much to want to leave. Even in an anti-gun state such as Massachusetts is far better than amny other nations.

MatthewVanitas, we have something in common. I just got back from an oral exam for the Foreign Service (for a specialist position) last week. I passed and they will let me know where I am on the register in a month. My biggest concern is where am I going to store all my guns? You get tons of leave so you will be able to come home a few times a year and shoot but storing the guns can be a problem.

Does Washington DC count as an anti-gun foreign country? I hear other languages as often as I do English, and w/o my guns I'm bored silly . . . :(

martial arts, motorcycles or karting... all three have uncanny overlap with shooters. Airsoft is okay.

MatthewVanitas,

If you get posted to Norway, your shooting hobby shouldnt suffer to much. We have IPSC shooting and bullseye and different hunting related competitons. Thats for both for rifles and pistol. A lot of different clubs. Most people shoot bullseye of some sort. I shoot IPSC rifle and pistol. I would think that you even could bring your favorite guns with you. I dont know the paperwork regarding that, though.

As for the scandinavian countries, Norway and Finnland has the most reasnoable gun laws. Denmark and Sweden is a little bit trickier, Sweden does not approve of IPSC shooting or semi auto rifles. Denmark wont allow any caliber above 9mm and so on.

Maybe this wasnt what you asked about... , but if Norway is a place where you can go I strongly recomend it... Just ask me more about shooting sports in Norway/scandinavia either here or via PM, I`lll be happy to answer!

Well, there was the Japanese gentleman who trained on Airsoft, came to the US for a few weeks of transition training, and won the Bianchi Steel Plate Challenge...

I presume that Airsoft guns and gear would be reasonably accessible in Japan. Not so much in Kyrgyzstan.

Pardon me. I never read you were going to be in Kyrgystan for sure. In that case, a sling shot :D

We'll also be skiing and fourwheeling (what we did here in the States). Again, not too sure what else until we do get here and see what's available locally/regionally.

Ok, I don't really keep track of what IPSC shooting is, but semi automatic rifles arent illegal, just a bit hard to get. Atleast EBR's, rifles such as Ruger Mini-14, (maybe the Mini-30 too), M1A, M1 Garand/Carbine etc. are easier to get ones hands on AFAIK...not sure what the laws says about foreigners getting a license to buy firearms here, but getting them in isn't impossible.

Unarmed shooter,

Yes you are right about that. It is semi autos for use in IPSC who I know is difficult to get, you can get those rifles for hunting i guess? My bad.:)
