1st Assume the AWB will not only be renewed later this year, but is actually extended to cover a greater number/variety of firearms that are currently permitted under the AWB (AR, Mini-14, etc...) - as a number of threads here on THR have suggested/discussed.

2nd Assume also that you currently own no firearms potentially covered by renewed and extended AWB restricting such greater variety of firearms.

What to buy before the AWB is renewed/extended?

In other words, although I have owned rifles in the past, I don't currently own any and feel it prudent to buy something before the AWB is potentially extended. What to buy?

Buy a good quality AR-15 receiver. Uppers from CQB shorties to HB varminters can be purchased competitively and sent by mail. Pick up all the appropriate mags available.

FAL receiver from FAC is about $179 or so, for the Imbel. If you want a US made, they're about $199.

AK receivers are $60 from OOW, there are other sources of them too.

AR receivers are a good choice too.

There are also AK receiver flats and pre-bent shells, and AR 80% receivers. These take some work, but at least the bad guys dont know you have them. There are also 1911 frames that are 80% that can be had, too.

Magazines and milsurp ammo. If they get a "tightened" AWB, these are the first things that will get banned.

Lower receivers, of course!

Night vision equipment, if you can afford it! They're almost cetain to go after that stuff sooner or later.

But save at least $250!!! This will be for a campaign donation AGAINST the jackesses that vote for it!

AR-15 !!! (lowers and at least one or two full rifles with evil 'flash hiders')

AR-10 !!!

Normal-caps for any gun I may ever own. (ie, most Glock pistols, a shoot-load of quality AR mags, USP, etc. ad nasaum)

Benelli R1

Probally an M-14/M1A just because (though it's too heavy for me to really like it.) And Garand for old time's sake. Because it'll be banned too.

Oh, and a Barrett M82A1 and a boatload of ammo.

Body Armor in addition to all above.

One potential problem with buying just lowers, is that you may have the burden of proving they were assembled into a full gun prior to the new ban. That's the trouble people have now with some "Prebans" that were not sold as full guns. It would depend on how the new ban was worded.

Mags and ammo, definitely. Then more receivers. Unless you don't have any good "AW"s at all, in which case one or two should be a top priority.

Mags, mags and more mags. I ordered a few Uzi mags this morning and will be doing a group buy for AR mags with some friends later in the week.

Ian's advice is excellent, if you have no "Assault Weapon" as defined by your local gun hating government...buy them now.

Good point. Plus I'm not the patient type, I'll probably just buy the whole thing.

I'd snag a cheap AK, an AR (make mine a Bushy "M4gery"), a FAL and/or G3 clone, and a M1A. Then snag at least 10 mags for each one and call it done, you're covered. Insert multiples if you want fun guns for your shooting buddies/future kids to use. Especially the cheap guns like the AK, snag several...

If you didn't have anything already, and were working with a limited budget, I'd recommend sticking with one particular design- FAL, AK, AR, whatever.

Get one or two rifles, or a rifle and another receiver, and a big fat stack of magazines.

Lower receivers..But Im confident that ban will expire with nothing to take its place.Majority leader Delay has said its not gonna come up even for a vote and the president cant sign what does not reach his desk.

I would hedge my bets by buying lowers or receivers and not complete rifles unless you don't have any now. That way you are not stuck with post ban configeration if a new ban is not put in place. After all we are having a colapasable stock installation party in september arn't we?

I understand the whole "prepare for the worst and hope for the best" philosophy, but hopefully you all are put at least as much effort into curtailing efforts to renew the ban as you are in contemplating what to buy just in case.

Politicians and their staff don't read internet forums. They read letter and faxes, and answer phone calls. It takes 2 minutes to look up a reps number and call him. Is 2 minutes of your time more than you are willing to spend every once in a while to make sure we pass rkba on to the next generation?

If you check out that site in my signature, you'll find that I'm one of its creators. So yes, I am doing my part.;)

Simple questions......If the ban were to be tightened down.....wouldnt all the rifles that were created before the new lockdown be considered a preban rifle to an extent to where the rifles themselves created before sept 04 would be exempt from the new bans? I would think they would still have to follow the traditional post-ban rifle laws that are currently in place and any firearm created after sept 04 would become the latest post ban rifle. Understand what im saying? My wording seems bad. Also why stock up on magazines? thanks in advance.

Why mags? Because mags break, wear out, get lost, and without 'em, your super-duper semiauto becomes a ponderously slow single-shot.

Or if you want an economic reason, because if the AW repasses, they'll be worth their weight in gold (as some nearly are now) to people who value the first set of reasons.

I would actually throw in SKSs too. They may not end up getting thrown into any new ban because of the non-detatchable magazine, but I'm betting if they're one of the few defense semi-autos left out there, you won't be paying $100 for one either.

OK my post-renewedAWB 'survival kit' now includes:
1) full stg 58 "parts kit" I bought last year.
2) couple cases of 7.62x51mm(800 aussi, 1000SA, 500 port)
3) a stainless 15rd 92FS mag($65, I wonder what it'll be worth if AWB renewed hehehe and now its MINE! MINE! My...precious...)

Wish List:
1) Gear Logo FAL receiver($175-200?)
2) 2 FML G22 mags($50 each!)
3) 4 'new' austrian mags for the new year($10 each?)
4) A half dozen asian contract 92FS 15rd mags.($20 each?)
5) 2000 golden sabre 124gr bullets(for reloading).. hey I've got to justify it somehow right?($100)

Hmmm I miss anything?

No AKs or ARs.:barf:

Man it sucks being broke. I just shelled out $1300 for the coming semester now I've got to prepare against nutty politicians stripping me of my gear!
