I need some help here.... I want to get an "all around rifle" which I can plink and maybe hunt some deer and wild boar with later on. Ammo pricing for plinking is a concern so I've been looking at a few options.

Marling Lever in 357 cause it can shoot the 38, SKS and Savage 223.

If you have nay other recommendations please let me know. I don't want to spend more than 600...

Find you a gunshow russian or chinese SKS. You can't beat them. The 7.62X39 in a 154 grn softpoint will take down any deer or wild hog. Get some of the 122 grain hp or fmj's for plinkin and tearing things up.

Should be able to find one easily for 325 or so.. Don't mess with the duckbill detach mags, they don't feed that great. The 10 rod internal box works perfectly. Look for one with a chrome bore or at least one with a good shiny bore. Yugo 59/66 or notorious for having sewerpipe bores, I have one, its still a good shooter. Got it back in the glory day's of 2004 for $125.00

I am leaning more and more toward the SKS. I hear they are reliable and shoot pretty accurate. I have somebody that wants to unload his for about 400 - russian 1954

Just the sling.. want $450 with about 400 rounds of wolf amo. Anything in particular I should look for when inspecting?

Pay the 450, get that ammo.. Thats a great deal. Just inspect the bore. If you dont and I assume you don't have a bore light, take a white piece of paper or anything white and place it near the breach or chamber to reflect some light in there. Its probably fine. They are built like tanks.

For an extra $75 or so you can buy a rear aperture from Tech Sights for the SKS, AK and a few other rifles.

Guys claim that their shooting really improves thanks to the small peep and longer sight distance.

It goes on the rear of the bolt cover and the only bit of work seems to be removing the standard rear sight.

What's the most important variable? The 7.62x39 is about as cheap as it gets w/centerfire deer cartridge, but the SKS doesn't have good options regarding optics. It can be done, but not w/o challenges. If you don't mind iron sights-then the SKS is your best best.

Same problem with my favorite, the Mosin Nagant. The rounds are fairly cheap, very good deer slayers, but the weapons are harder to scope.

5.56/.223 is a cheaper plinking round & usually easy to scope, but many question it's deer slaying prowess.

The .357/.38 carbine will scope well and take deer/hogs, but ain't cheap to feed.

A shotgun maybe another option.

I've spent an awful lot of money trying to find the best "all around" (rifle, spouse, dog, car, motorcycle, camera lens, beer, audio, mobile phone, laptop, etc.). Good luck!
If you want to scope the weapon, it's gonna cost more to shoot.

sks

I did see it. A beauty ! Stock is is Golden, Could not see the Arsenal or year stamped anywhere. The stock is forced stamped/ otherwise, the boar is in great shape it has KBI import mark.... Russia SKS-45 KBI Import etc etc numbers matching all the way around is yP 54xx - it has number 1 mark on the muzzle - he told me the number represents the accuracy of the carbine..

We agreed on $465.00 with 540 rounds of Wolf HP.... advice on why the arsenal mark is missing ? Thanks much. Can I post pictures here ?

At 20 cents a round, that is $108 for the ammo, then another $357 for the rifle, I'd say you came out with a really good deal! And yes, you can post pics here. If fact, some people here will get mad if you don't...;)

For using as a hunting rifle for deer and boar? I'd skip that and buy a 30-30.

Marlin, Henry, Winchester and Rossi all have budget minded models and you have a much broader selection of hunting ammunition available.

Here we go... I'm sure everyone likes my art deco tile ;)

This is just for starters.... I always wanted a "RUSSIAN" Next it might be a Savage 10fp 308 or if my IRS refund check is big enough a pre 64 Winchester 306...;)

If you haven't already, check on the Ruger Gunsight Scout, kinda pricey, $700 in my local shop, but looks/feels good. 308, takes M14 mags, bolt w/ irons

Very nice Russian: the original SKS.

No useless Yugo grenade launcher, a real bayonet (no spike) and chrome-lined bore, under very hard, nice wood, unlike the Chinese Choa wood.
