Is there any one type of firearm that is legal to have in all 50 states?
one that can be carried with you anywhere you go? single shot 12 gauge,.22, black powder, etc? I am not talking about CCW but one you can own and have with you in all places.

There are many guns you can call "legal" in all states. The problem arises in more restrictive states where you have to be carrying or transporting your firearm with a specific purpose (eg. to the range, to hunt, etc).

Technically, I think the answer to your question is no, because all firearms of any type are banned in Chicago.

Aside from that any number a firearms are legal in all 50 states.

First, chicago doesn't ban all guns, just almost. Second, the states that require registration are probably going to be a problem for you. While black powder isn't considered a gun, in Massachusetts you have to have a gun permit to own pepper spray.

I have a hard time thinking of any state that will allow you to carry a gun everywhere you go. There are always off-limits places.

Federal law would allow the free travel of black powder guns, but state law usually go a bit (or a lot) further in restriction, like here in Nevada. The Nevada Statutes say that a "firearm" is any object that "fires a projectile through a barrel due to explosion or another expanding force" or something like that. That would encompass black powder, c02 pellet guns (although now exempt), rimfires, centerfires, etc.

Some states say some guns aren't even guns, others say some guns are akin to nuclear devices and should be treated as such.

IDK what firearm you could take to all 50 states and have it be legal.
