Whatever works 100%
I use whatever ammo works 100%, followed by an accuracy versus cost tradeoff.
In my 9m.m., I used HYDROSHOK +P+ for about a decade. As my cache of these rounds are getting older, I have switched to FEDERAL HST which is just as accurate and costs a lot less.
In my .40 caliber, I use a 155 grain JHP. The brand is not that important as most of this weight hollowpoint ammo has proven effective. I usually use WINCHESTER Ranger brand.
In .45ACP, I used 230 grain HYDROSHOK ammo. I had plenty of it and found it worked well in most guns. In the 70 Series COLT Government model, it was not 100% reliable. I used WINCHESTER Sub Sonic 230 grain hollow point (now sold as WINCHESTER white box) in that gun. It fed 100% and was much less costly.
In my .38 Special revolvers, I use REMINGTON 125 grain +P semi jacketed hollow points. Good performance for the cost.
The HYDRO SHOK is a great bullet at low and medium velocity. It loses the expansion advantage as the velocity goes up. I would not bother with HYDRO SHOK when velocity exceeds 1100 feet per second.
I have not had enough experience with GOLD DOT to speak about it.
