I'm looking to buy a rifle vise to make cleaning and other servicing easier. Cost is a factor (around $50), I don't need anything high end or with many "bells & whistles , just a basic, solid, sturdy clamp device to secure the rifle by the stock. One model I did see was a "Tipton Gun Vise" that did offer a basic model with a cam locking design on the rear of the stock. Does anyone have a prefrence or think the Tipton model is not a good choice? Any input would be appreciated.

MTM makes some very serviceable plastic ones. The one I wound up with has compartments for storage of stuff with a transparent sliding top, and two "V" shaped brackets that insert in the top for the muzzle and stock ends of the rifle. It works for me with bolt actions, M1, and M1A. Have been using it for about five years now.

I previously had one of the older type wooden units with the C-clamp arrangement and so forth. Never really cared for it and much prefer this one. Not sure of the cost but probably in the area of $20.

I thoroughly enjoy my Tipton gun vise. It sure beats routine cleaning/scoping in your lap.

Any 4" jawed bench vise with pads on the jaws mounted securely on a solid bench will do nicely. 12 ounce leather makes a good pad.
