What's a load in 30-06 that will duplicate 308 velocities?

My Daughter won a rifle Savage Axis and she chose a .308. Anyway...I have set up for reloading .308 but I'd also like to load from now on the 30-06 loads she has of her grandfather's to approximate .308 ballistics using the exact same components (net brass) I don't hunt anymore and even if I did I have plenty of pre-loaded rounds. Any suggestion for bullet weight...bullet style...powders etc is fine because I have years of loading for the 06' and have practically all I need for any combo except Varget powders. Nothing that has to be precise to match as two different rifles will have their own opinions.

Probably just back off a couple of grains in the 30-06 and be done with it.

Thanks.

If I were trying to download a 30-06 to "military-like" 308 velocities, I'd consider these powders for their working pressures/case fill and burn completion.

DO NOT LOAD FROM THIS TABLE
USE A MANUAL

I am not sure exactly what you are asking but for example loading 308 Win with a popular powder like IMR 4064 and a 150 grain bullet for velocities in the 2500 to 2600 FPS range (Bolt gun 22" BBL 1:12 Twist) you would load around 41.7gr to 43.3gr. To get about the same results in a 30-06 using the same bullet you would load around 44.2 to 46.1 grains of IMR 4064.

Those loads are approximate loads and I am not suggesting you even use them. Any loading manual should get you where you seem to want to be going. Choose some 308 loads with the velocities you want and then find the same velocities for the 30-06 using the same powder, primer, bullet and components in general.

Just my take....

Thanks guys...I am going to just go with a reloading manual. That'll give me info for every bullet I have and powder and all's I gotta do is match velocities. I overthought this problem. Thanks again.

Done...and the back of the manual had downrange information. About 3.5 grains difference to get 2600 fps with a 165 Gameking hollow point in both of them. Makes both of them 400 yard capable rifles which is about as far as I trust myself if I get to go again shooting off of a west Texas bluff.

Something else...I don't have to use the same powders if I'm just matching velocities.

Thanks...Bexar

I prefer IMR-4064 powder in the '06. What powder do you have to load with? That seems to be more important than midrange load data as powder can be hard to come by.

I think I can help you OP. I did the same thing in my .30-06 because my wife liked it so much. I am using RL-19 powder. The speer #14 manual has it listed I believe 56-62gr of RL-19 using a 150gr bullet max velocity is listed at ~2800fps

Here is my load: use with caution and follow all safety precautions.

59.5 gr RL-19
150gr Interlock SP
Remington brass trimmed to min. length
COAL ?
Rem 9 1/2 primer
Has 90% case fill too.
~2650fps in a 22" barrel its easy on the shoulder and very accurate consistent 3/4" at 100yards.

About the easiest, if not the safest way to find a similar velocity between the two, is by researching and comparing the data and velocity estimates. It should be a very simple research project since both cartridges work with many of the same powders, but obviously with different load tables. I would start by finding loads that will produce similar velocities.

Sounds like another fun reloading project, as with any load development, it allows us to shoot more, which is always fun IMO.
