When did S&W start using MIM parts?

At what point did S&W start using MIM parts? I just bought a revo (as mentioned in a previous thread)...a 19-3 and I just want a little history on the gun.
Also, what is the significance of the "-3"? Is is a particular generation? Production lot? stamp of the guy that assembled it?

Started using MIM around '98 or '99 as I recall. The parts have been getting steadily uglier ever since.

"-3" is the "revision level" that marks design modifications made to the series of pistols.

I have a model 19-5 built in 1993, it has the tigtest lock up of any revolver I own. Its a four incher in blue, bull barrel, Its also very very accurate.
