Hey all,

I just picked up a used 629-4 with the 6" barrel for a song. Here's the hitch: the rear sight is missing and some god-awful scope mount is in it's place. Ok, the scope mount is off, but now I have to acquire a new rear sight. I can order one from Brownells at a nice price with my C&R discount, but I need to know if it was built before or after 1994 (since I know it's not a pre-74).

The serial number is BRP65XX

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

"Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" by Jim Supica and Richard Nahas (1996) pages 210-211. This publication lists Serial numbers up to August 1994:

Last 6 entries for revolvers as follows:

Feb 1993 BMB xxxx
Mar 1993 BNW xxxx
Oct 1993 BPD xxxx
Nov 1993 BPE xxxx
Dec 1993 BPK xxxx
Aug 1994 BRF xxxx

Using the serial # you posted (BRP65xx) your 629-4 was definitely manufactured AFTER AUGUST 1994. I would place it's manufacture date around late 1994 or early 1995.

I hope this helps!

Indeed it does. Thanks for the help!

I think I may just have to invest in that book.

Thanks again, Gary!
