With christmas coming I was wondering where I can get 7.62x39 at the best price. I use my sks as a fun gun for plinking. Where can I send my wife for the best deal? Internet or mom and pop gunshop?

Yesterday I picked up a bunch at Academy. They have their "Monarch" in-house brand for $2.86 per box. That works out to $143 per 1000.

The problem is, its rarely in stock. They are usually sold out within a day or two of getting a shipment in. The guy at the gun counter told me they usually only get a shipment once a month (because corporate HQ does all ordering, individual stores have no control in ordering inventory). So if you see it, you better grab it.

The boxes say "Made in Russia", so its probably just repackaged Wolf or MilSurp.

Grant 48, that Monarch is made by Barnaul. It is good ammo. Here in the Austin area, they have been out of it since August or so. When I see it I grab it fast, but I never see it anymore, the shelf is always empty.

That Golden Tiger from AIM is good stuff too. They just got some in after about a year of not having it.

hartzpad, you might want to swing by my shop when you get a chance. I just picked up a bunch of old 7.62x39 that had been sealed in a survivalists cache since the 1990s. We picked it all up in an estate sale. Individual boxes of every type you can think of, and we're blowing some of them out for really cheap.

I found some Barnaul (Silver & Brown Bear) at my local gunstore for $70/500 a few weeks back. That was right in line with what I have found online.

The current Monarch packaging in my local Academy Sports stores contains the brass-cased Prvi Partizan ammo, with a NNY headstamp. That specific ammo is reloadable.

I ordered some Wolf "Military Classic", but found out afterwards it was not the 'best' ammo. I paid $155 from CheaperThanDirt. Sportsmans Guide was out of stock until January, I think

It should be delivered today, I'll see if I have any problems.

Thanks to FBMG, as few of us from Action Target took most of what was left of the .223 and 7.62x39. Thanks James!

I've seen the brass cased Monarch in .223, .30-06, .270, etc, but I have not seen any 7.62x39 in brass cases. So far the only brass cased 7.62x39 that I've seen at Academy is American Eagle.

hartzpad, obviously we must have had the best prices, because you guys cleaned us out! :D

eh

The question should not be where's the cheapest x39... but rather...

Where is:

7.62x39
copper jacketed FMJ
non-corrosive
solid lead core non-magnetic bullet

This is the only thing hard to find. For some reason or other Wolf copper x39 is hard to find - only steel core or steel jacket. such ammo is often banned in dry areas due to fire / ricochet reasons.

If all you want is x39 cheap, sportsmansguide.com has some really nice Wolf that will do you right. shoot that ammo in commie guns and you'll be ok.
