Where to get milsurp rifles??

Hey Y'all, got a quick question. I've seen a lot of people that like the old bolt action rifles mention that you can get surplus stuff for $50-100 (or more), and that ammo is easy to get. general concensus is that they are lots of fun to have. can anybody tell me more about such rifles and where to get them? the most common one i've read about around here is a mosin-nagant (sp?). what other decent surplus guns can be had? Is this kind of stuff what you would call C&R? if anybody could shed some light on this that would be great, thanks

Aim surplus and Southern Ohio Gun are a couple of good places...as well as a local gun show.

I picked up a 91/30 Nagant a few months back and at the last show I got a Yugo SKS. I regret the Nagant because it has a pretty good kick to it and I don't shoot it that often (cost was $139 and was $120 for 1400 rounds).

The SKS on the other hand is an absolute joy to shoot. Not as much recoil as an AK and ammo runs about $85-$90 per thousand at a gunshow (and yes you can use Wolf ammo all day long in 'em).

I actually enjoyed the 5 hours I spent cleaning the cosmoline out of it

At the last gunshow they had the SKS for $109 and the guy had about 30 of them on the table so I was able to pick it out. You can't go wrong for $109!!

Based on a lot of reading, and a small amount of personal experience, I have the impression AIM Surplus is one of the best, if not the best, place to buy from.

If you want a Mosin-Nagant, Aztec is the place to go. Friendly people and fast service.

AIM has the best deals on Yugo SKS's right now.

Stay away from Interordnance.

Cool stuff. thanks for the links. the other question i have is the rifles themselves. how are those mosin nagants on acuracy? are these just old blasters you keep around to play with, or can you reliably hit stuff with em out past 100 yds? which model of mossin nagant seems the best to you guys? what is the cartridge comparable with ( .30-06, .308, .223)?

On SKS's. what are that guns definingly "good" features? can you mod em to take a mag? stripper clips seem like they would get tiresome there. accuracy?

Another vote for Aim Surplus.

The 7.62x54R used in the Mosin-Nagant is similar to 30.06 and 8mm Mauser. WWI ~WWII generation heavy duty.

The stripper clips used in the SKS are easier than you might think once you get used to them. Lock bolt, insert clip, bloop, pull and release, ready. Guess it depends on how many rounds you plan on firing off in one string.

SKS Good features? Cheap, plentiful (at the moment), lots of aftermarket stuff available, very reliable, cheap ammo.

Expect 3"~4" group at 100yards from an average SKS. Slightly better than an average AK type. YMMV.

The Mosins are very accurate weapons, overall.

I have the M38, M44 and the M91-30.

Of the three models I have I'm partial to the M38 and the 91-30 next.

I must say the M44 is a kicker.....or it sure seems it to me.

For the prices they are asking I don't think you can go wrong.

However, for collectability in terms of equity potential building the guns I don't think Mosin Nagants are going to do that. At least not any time soon.

Also, Mosin Nagants, although very, very good guns, are not the best shooters in MY group of guns.

I have Springfield Remington 1903A3s, Swedish M96s, Schmidt Rubin K31s and a few others that will conistantly out shoot my Mosins.

But, I like collecting for the 'pieces of history'.

But, I will suggest getting your hands on one, at least, very good condition Swede M96 before they are gone (but you're likely to pay $300 plus). My next suggestion would be the Schmidt Rubin K31 as I forsee the supply of these drying up.

There are some great other Mausers out there still at decent prices (K98, M48, M48A, CZ24, etc.) and some...well, most...of these are terrific shooters as well.

The outward appearances of some of these guns on the market these days leave something to be desired.

I was fortunate as I got most of my guns when they first became popular and I could pick and choose and got some very good examples of history.

But, if you look around, and be patient, you can still find guns in excellent and arsenal refurbed conditon and some models that are unissued.

There's more I'd like to suggest but I don't want the other readers to have to go through a chapter here.

BTW, the Mosin 7.62 X54R round is right in the same category/range as the 30.06, 8MM and .308. It's an accurate and efective round.
