which 1911 and why?

I'd go with the Eclipse because I like Kimber better than Colt - in current manufacture anyway. The Eclipse is a unique looking and purdy gun IMO.

In my experience, Kimbers generally shoot circles around Colts. Simply based on the sights of the two guns you linked to, most shooters would shoot the Kimber more accurately. The old school sights on the Colt certainly have their charm, but do not lend themselves to punching tight little groups.

I like a little bling factor in my 1911s, but that Colt is pimped out over the top. :barf: No offense if you like that kind of thing.

I don't have any experience with .38 Super, but I love .45 ACP.

In any case - enjoy!

I would choose Colt over Kimber. I would also choose .45ACP over .38 Super.

Why? I just don't trust the Schwarz safety Kimber uses in their Series II 1911autos. Colt developed the Schwarz in the 1930s and ditched it due to reliability issues. Also, Kimbers use laot more MIM (Metal Injection Moulded) internal parts than Colt does.

If it were me, I would buy a Springfield Armory 1911 in .45ACP - get whchever Springfield you can for $1000. I have owned three Springfield 1911s (I currently own two) and have found them to be well made, reliable and accurate.

My current favorite is the TRP Operator - you should be able to find a new one for around $1375 or a used one for around $1000. I recently got lucky and found a new one for $1200. It is very well made, VERY accurate and goes BOOM and tosses brass every time.

kbheiner7,

yep, that one is real shinny to say the least-I am mostly interested in a accurate gun first and foremost-I got to hold the colt at a local gun shop and it was nice...just not sure how much work they do at the custom shop to make 'em Colt customs.

but more than anything, I want an accurate gun out to 25-50 yards...

Use

What are you going to use it for? Carry, duty, matches or CHL?

A buddy of mine shooting his Ultra CDP. Note the head area and now him working on the X ring.

Hunting, my Kimber Custom TLE II and only part of it's success.

Kimbers can kick backside though.

But if you are looking for sex appeal then go with Springfield.......

I'd like to think I could shoot match with it...one day! Not going to hunt with it, not going to carry with it, no CHL, no duty-just want something that shoots lights out at the range at extended distances...

Definitely the Eclipse... A Kimber Eclipse under 1000 dollar is a steal. I have a Kimber Stainless II, and it shoots great... (not the external extractor versons). You only have to change the kimber match trigger to a less-sharp version to prevent finger cuts. My Kimber zeros at 50 yards, and I definitely believe that it can take down a bear with the proper hunting JHP ammo at 50 yards.

And an awesome job with the deer, man! Did you really kill that deer with Custom II, and if so, at what range, and with what ammo, and how many shots? Thanks.

LubbockDave - if the Colt is from their custom shop, it's probably more accurate than the factory Colts I have shot.

50 yards is a heck of a long shot with those GI sights - at least for me. The combat sights on the Eclipse you linked would be better. Better yet would be a Eclipse Target model. I have a Kimber with target sights that I can reliably plug a pop can @ 50 yards - they are great sights for longer pistol shots. Of course, you can get or install target sights on any model of 1911 you chose.

Long Ranges

We shoot 8" balloons for fun at 130 yards after we finish serious shooting in close targets with mostly Kimbers, but the Smith's and Springfields hang right in there doing the same. Depending on prices where you are I'd pick Smith, Springfield, or Kimber and not in that particular order.

Yes

Yes, I did kill that deer with the Custom TLE II. Range should be listed in the same forum thread, but if not, he was at 20 feet. Load data as well is listed.

Between the two guns you mentioned I'd pick the Colt, mainly due to its mostly bar stock fire control components.

If I had a choice I wouldn't pick either of the guns you mentioned. Save up another 300 bucks, and get yourself the entry level Les Baer Concept II. It's in a totally different category than the Colt or Kimber. I have nothing against Kimber, I used to own one and it was a nice gun. I also currently own a Colt XSE. One of these days I may even get a chance to shoot it. :neener:

I have shot the Baer plenty though and can't emphasize enough that you won't be disappointed.
