I am building an AR for plinking and just to have fun. I think i have it narrowed down to 2 uppers.

The first is Palmetto State Armory PSA 16'' Hammer Forged Midlength Upper.

The second is Surplus Ammo & Arms Chrome Lined AR-15 M4 16" Upper

The surplus arms upper I can pickup locally for $455 plus 6% tax.

The PSA upper I will have to wait 10-15 days and will cost me $50 more.

Is there other uppers I should be looking at in this price range?

No experience with either, but I would say the PSA (mid-lenght).

Between those two, I'd go for the PSA.

I did just buy a BCM lightweight 16" midlength. With a CTR stock and T-1 mounted it's just under 7lbs and the balance is great!

PSA budget AR I built for the wife (16" mid-length MOE kit medium barrel) is fantastic. Lower parts kit is better than Daniel Defense, DPMS or Rock River.

Just out of curiousity, since it will be just for plinking have you considered buying a 9mm upper? My son built one a couple of years ago and we really like it. Ammo is cheap and because it's a pistol caliber we're able to shoot it at the indoor range.

Already have a high point carbine in 9mm. I hardly ever go to an indoor range there is about 1000 acres of blm land about 10 miles south of me.

Both uppers are fine, but i would prefer the PSA because it is a midlength.

The 9mm is a great plinking round, but i would want a 5.56/.223 in my inventory. 9mm out to 100 yards, .223 out to 500 yards. The 223 can be a great varmint gun. There are many more reasons to have a 223 around.

Quality wise they will be pretty similar, so you really need to ask yourself if you want a carbine or mid-length gas system. I personally have a PSA mid-length .223 wylde upper that works great. Whichever you get, I would definitely get the Magpul MOE handguards. They work great and offer a lot of mounting options.

i would definately go with the PSA - good rep (have one and think its best bang for the buck in an AR, along with White Oak). Mid-Length is super nice. PSA FTW

i dont think at this point with psa i would be comparing them to daniel defense. they are good but not top tier and ive read alot of complaints about them as far as shipping delays and orders missing parts.

That PSA upper is a good one. Have a friend that picked that one up for his PSA build a few months ago. He's been very happy with it and it shoots very well.

Hard to beat PSA for pricing and their specs. DTI (Del Ton) is crap compared to PSA...I've owned a few DTIs and while they were alright, the PSA specs are much better. I'd much rather have a 1:7 twist barrel FN barrel over a DTI 1:9 twist.

I ended up getting the SAA upper. He dropped the price to $405 plus tax. I'll spend the money I saved on optics.
