I am currently looking to get a Colt AR-15. I don't understand the difference between the Tactical model and the LE Carbine model though, aside from that the LE model can accept a grenade launcher (don't think I'll be needing one of those though). I was also told that the LE Carbine is more sought after though and would retain its value more than the Tactical model.

Anyways, any info you guys could give me on the difference is appreciated. I posted this here rather than in the more specific forum because I really just want people to give me the low-down on what the difference is, nothing more.

I'm buying the Colt for reliability (I am under the impression for reliability, the top contenders are Colt and LMT for military-grade AR's), and also because I understand they retain their value more than LMT AR's because of their rarity and difficulty in obtaining.

Thanks guys.

Get a model 6933 (Colt M4LE SBR 11.5" barrel) from Clyde Armory (www.policeguns.com).

Limited run, great size & design. Slap an AAC Omni silencer on it, and it's perfect.

Being a limited run of only several hundred (initiated by an order by a police department), it should have some collectible value.
The size is great, silencer included, for indoor use - with supposedly tolerable noise levels without hearing protection (if you want it for home defense).
The Omni silencer attaches directly to the flash hider. Only recommended change is swapping the flash hider's crush washer with a peel (or otherwise exactly sized) washer.
Collapsed, overall length is compact.
Short barrel is fine, as out of the box I was reliably hitting a small metal target at 100m.
Heavier ammo like Mk.262 is recommended to compensate for the reduced velocity.
Military design means proper-sized pivot holes, and easy takedown without tools (front pin is held in by detent, instead of screws like other Colt models).
Details of design make it as close to a true M4 as legally can be.

Given other options, I prefer a pure Colt.

Not a lot of 6933s left. Call Clyde.

I first met the AR in M16 form in 1966. Later owned a 1980s vintage Colt CAR-15, and have fooled with various and sundry others. Sold the CAR but replaced it with a Bushmaster M4gery in similar configuration.

Had I thought the Colt was superior to the BM in some significant way I would have gone for the Colt in spite of the higher price. I do not think that that is the case and any alleged higher resale value down the road is moot because I did not buy it to sell. I bought it as a tool to use.

The carbine is probably the most useful variant, and the lighter the better. I prefer a fixed handle and the A1 rear sight but I could see going flat top if you really expected to need the rail to mount stuff at a later date. In my case I put on a compact 1.5X ACOG which worked out great (and adds only 6 ounces!).

The other thing I would strongly recommend is the installation of a good match grade trigger. I put in a Jard nonadjustable two stage and it is probably the best thing you can do for an AR.

Otherwise, keep it simple!!!

hmm

law enforcement= le

and other i believe is regular

you shouild get flat top:)
you could put like millions of accessories on there:) its like moding your daughter or car:)

hehe good luck
DO NOT GET OLY !!!!

I don't want to go Class III, so the 11.5" barrel w/silencer is not an option.

I just need to decide between the:

LE Carbine - http://colt.com/law/lecarbine.asp

and the

Tactical Carbine

http://colt.com/law/ar15a3.asp

both have removable cary handle to make it a flat-top. The only other difference I can see is the ability to mount a grenade launcher on the LE-Carbine (again Class III - so I'm not into it - I don't need unwarranted searches by the ATF to waste my time  )

I've done a considerable amount of research on AR's and was originally split between LMT and Colt because I hear both are very reliable and are military-grade, which is important to me. I ended up getting LMT's. The Colt however holds resale value, and that's also important to me. One of these days Colt will stop manufacturing for civilians altogether, and then I'll have quite an asset on my hands. So I think I'm going to sell my LMT's and get two Colts.

So come on guys.... help me out here. What is the difference asides from the grenade launcher capability, and slightly different sling-mount positions? Otherwise they seem pretty much the same, with maybe the Tactical having a slightly heavier barrel.

OT question for ctdonath

How do you get the collapsing stock off the tube like in your picture? My AR doesn't seem to strip down like that.

get anyone you can and do it as quickly as possible, the opportunity to get one is going fast. A new ban on assault weapons is on the hill again. See legal and political on this website:cuss:

You are comparing the Tactical (AR6721) to the LE (LE6920).

So come on guys.... help me out here. What is the difference asides from the grenade launcher capability, and slightly different sling-mount positions?

The LE6920 has a 16" M4 barrel profile, M4 feed ramps and a 1/7 twist barrel. The AR6721 has a 16" heavy barrel and is 1/9 twist. Not sure on whether it has the extended feed ramps of the M4.

The LE6920 has double-heat shield M4 handguards and a side-mounted sling swivel. The AR6721 has single-heat shield CAR handguards and the standard bottom sling swivel.

Those are the major differences between them that I am aware of. I know the LE6920 has the enhanced extractor spring in the bolt and a heavy buffer. I do not know if the AR6721 has those or not.

I see match grade triggers crap out in classes all the time. Sure they are nice for target shooting, but that's all they are good for IMO.

Save some money. Buy something else. My Bushamster has a lot of rds through it without cleaning, and it works fine. Keep it wet and it keeps running. I bought a Stag stripped lower recently, and will probably be putting a CMT upper on it, with some type of quality 16", midlength, lightweight, 1:7 barrel when I can find one.

Not a problem with the ring. Leaving it pretty much as is, as most stock stuff works fine if you don't mess with it.

Only further upgrades I'm considering is replacing the carry handle with an EOTech red-dot and a non-folding BUIS rear sight. Maybe.

I've seen too many "improvements" break.
There's enough ambient light in my home that I'd rather work in the near-dark to my advantage, rather than an "I'm here!" light.

To the original post: there's surely a 16" version of it, getting you as close to an M4 without any legal hurdles.

I have a Colt 6721. It's a 1:9" twist 16" HBAR, (M4 marked upper w/ M4 feedramps) and is exceptionally accurate for what it is. The 6920 is a 1:7" twist 16" barrel that is a true M4- light under the handguards.

Alot of people bash Colt for a number of reasons not related the actual rifles the company produces. While I can only wish that Colt was more supportive of the private sector's desire to own their fine firearms, the fact is that Colt's AR's are outstanding. They use MP tested bolts and barrels, true M4 handguards and barrels, correct front sights, real M4 feedramps, mil-spec buffer tubes...

IMHO, Colt AR's are worth the extra $200-$400.

Just my $.02

I would also mention the 6721 weighs 7.0 pounds and the 6920 weighs 6.0 pounds. That extra pound can make a difference if you are lugging it all over God's creation.
